An autopsy in relation to the death of Yves Sakila has been completed, but gardaí say the results cannot be released for operational reasons.

Mr Sakila was detained for a number of minutes by security guards in Dublin city centre following an alleged shoplifting incident on Henry Street on Friday.

He was pronounced dead at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital later.

Gardaí are now seeking to speak with anyone who was on Henry Street (between Moore Street and Coles Lane) between 5pm and 5.25pm on Friday, May 15, 2026.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed by the Serious Crime Unit in Store Street and will lead the investigation from an incident room the garda station.

A family liaison officer has also been appointed to support the family of the deceased.

"Gardaí continue to engage with the male (aged in his 80s) who was injured," a garda spokesperson said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Store Street garda station on 01 666 8000, the Garda Confidential line, or any garda station.

"Investigations are ongoing," the spokesperson added.

The incident has prompted widespread concern and political reaction. Labour leader Ivana Bacik raised the matter in the Dáil, while justice minister Jim O'Callaghan said a “thorough Garda investigation” is underway.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin also expressed condolences to Yves Sakila’s family and said the case must be fully investigated.

Department store Arnotts said it is “deeply saddened” by Mr Sakila’s death and extended sympathies to his family, friends and the wider Congolese community in Ireland.

Gardaí said the incident has been reported to Fiosrú, the office of the police ombudsman.
