Cork woman departs to pursue new projects

Cork native Samantha Barry has led the influential Glamour magazine since 2018.

Cork native Samantha Barry has led the influential Glamour magazine since 2018.

Cork native Samantha Barry is to leave her role as editor-in-chief of Glamour magazine.

Ms Barry, from Ballincollig, made the announcement to staff this morning. A long-time editor of the influential Glamour and considered a prodigy of fashion publishing icon Anna Wintour, Barry has been the editor-in-chief of Glamour US since 2018.

In 2024, she was appointed Glamour's first global editorial director.

At the time, Wintour said, “Sam has impeccable editorial instincts and has successfully led Glamour into its digital future. She is passionate and cares deeply about what matters most to women today as shown through her powerful advocacy for issues like paid family leave. I’m incredibly excited for Glamour’s next era under her direction.”

Ms Barry's announcement came as a series of changes were announced at Condé Nast, including the closure of health and fitness magazine Self.

In an update on social media, she said: "After eight phenomenal years at Glamour I’m stepping away. As the title’s business model evolved, I made clear to Anna and leadership at Conde that this was the right moment to leave and pursue new projects."

Ms Barry said she is "enormously proud of what we built together".

"We took the brand to new digital heights, diversified our audience and revenue, and launched campaigns that genuinely moved the needle for women.

"Working alongside Anna Wintour, who championed me at every turn, has been one of my great professional privileges. Storytelling has always been at the heart of my career and ambitions, and I’m excited by what comes next."

Announcing a series of changes at Conde Nast, the company's CEO Roger Lynch said the publishing giant was aiming to position the "company for continued growth."
