Cork City’s Cillian Murphy is close to agreeing a cross-channel transfer, with Arsenal firmly in the mix to land the Ireland U21 midfielder.

The Gunners have been monitoring the 16-year-old all season and paid their latest visit to Turner’s Cross last Friday when City beat Murphy’s hometown club Treaty United 4-0, increasing their buffer at the First Division summit to 15 points.

Also in attendance for his latest man-of-the-match performance were scouts from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, who Murphy could join immediately.

However, the probability is he will remain at City until his 18th birthday in July 2027 when Brexit rules permit him to join a UK club.

Given the growing interest in the playmaker, and the fact his contract runs until the end of 2027, a pre-contract transfer deal over this summer is the likeliest next step.

That would allow the Rebels to keep possession of Murphy for the first half of next season’s Premier Division return.

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal hatched similar arrangements when recruiting teens Mason Melia and Victor Ozhianvuna respectively in the past 14 months.

A record upfront fee for Melia of €1.9m was broken by a slightly higher amount for Ozhianvuna and City value their prize asset in that bracket.

Roy O’Donovan’s €500,000 move to Roy Keane’s Sunderland in 2007 remains the club’s record transfer but they are mulling over various substantive proposals to smash that figure.

Murphy was one of six academy graduates to pen their first professional contracts last August.

Barry Robson integrated the youngster into his plans straight after his appointment, handing him his debut as a starter in the campaign opener against Treaty in February. He bagged his first goal in the March win at UCD.

Equally adept with either foot, the Limerickman’s versatility in central and wide roles makes him especially attractive to suitors. He became the third youngest Ireland U21 debutant in the recent draw against Qatar in Croatia.

City have exported a series of gems over the past six years, including Jake O’Brien, Jaden and Franco Umeh, as well as Cathal O’Sullivan, but their income was heavily linked to first-team appearances, international bonuses and sell-on fees.

The club will hope Murphy’s move starts a trend of valuations being met, mirroring that of some other LOI clubs.
