Following two-week US government ban, Anthropic’s Fable 5 to come back online | The Jerusalem Post

Fable 5, Anthropic’s most powerful AI model, is set to return to worldwide availability following more than two weeks of it being banned by the US government, Axios reported on Saturday.

A source from Anthropic told Axios that the security concerns raised by the Trump administration were resolved and that the model will be redeployed outside of the US soon.

According to insiders, the issue should be resolved in the coming week, following negotiations between Anthropic and the US government.

The Trump administration banned access to Fable 5 on June 12, following several months of conflict between US officials and the company over access to the technology, regulations, and safety mechanisms.

It is Anthropic's understanding that the government believes there is a method to bypass, or "jailbreak," a safeguard that would prevent Fable 5 from being used to identify software vulnerabilities, the company said.

Anthropic called the Trump administration's decision to ban Fable 5 a decision based solely on "verbal evidence of a potential narrow, non-universal jailbreak".

"We disagree that the finding of a narrow potential jailbreak should be cause for recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of people," the company said.

US, Anthropic to work on AI regulations

Mythos 5, Anthropic’s cybersecurity-centered model, was also limited to authorized individuals under heavy regulations imposed by the Trump administration.

“Anthropic has worked with the US government to address risks associated with Mythos 5 and Fable 5,” said US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Friday in a letter shared by tech news outlet Semafor.

"These efforts," he continued, "have yielded significant progress. In addition, Anthropic has committed to working with the US government on protocols and standards and releases."

Anthropic also mentioned that Mythos 5 is currently operating under “heavy guardrails,” which would make it impossible to use for cyberattacks or the development of biological weapons, two of the main concerns raised by US officials.

Finally, both Anthropic and OpenAI, currently two of the most prominent AI development companies, are pushing to codify US President Donald Trump’s executive order to “voluntarily vet new AI models.”

With both companies planning initial public offerings (IPOs) later this year, they aim to adopt more transparent frameworks that give government officials the power to block their developments.
