ultradamno: By the way, the first Battlebot to incorporate AI, Canada's Orbitron, was quickly and soundly defeated by Witch Doctor youtu.be... Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:00pm
Deano de los Muertos: Oh hi Mark Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:02pm
ultradamno: Now: Multiple hazards in effect...that from the local weather report, but a good tagline for this show Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:02pm
Spikey BXL: Mark, luddites Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
DjLorraine: Hi all   6:06pm
Marie de Chicago: Hey Mark, hey All! Could what they do with the food delivery workers be considered a monopoly? I've been using Lyft but I'm going to make a concerted effort to use regular cabs from now on. Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:06pm
Spikey BXL: stand and deliver! Avatar 6:08pm
MarciB: I may be the only New Yorker who doesn't use these apps. I know, weird! I imagine giving them cash tips - if you actually see them face-to-face- would be appreciated. Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm
Peter from Saranac Lake NY: Good evening Mark and everyone. In addition to, or because of the wage theft, many Uber and other gig workers need SNAP benefits. I *think* I've shared this as a gift article:

chresti: Hi Mark and markers! Avatar 6:13pm
MarciB: And to make matters worse, these delivery guys in NYC are apparently forced to speed on their ebikes due to the apps - which put them and other pedestrians in danger. Then there's also the apartment building fires caused by illegal lithium batteries on ebikes (cheaper). Workers and innocent people are hurt, killed - but big tech is are never held accountable. Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
zachary: Evening Mark, everyone. Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm
zachary: Cash is king.

Don't use these apps.

  6:15pm
Brianne from Asbury Park✨✨: Customers are able to yank tips on Uber Eats drivers, but this is insane. There’s money to be made here at the summer at the shore when nobody wants to move their car. I’ve never seen tips that low come up here for the actual effort. Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
zachary:

↳ Marie de Chicago @6:06

Hmmmm. There is competition among food delivery companies, so I don't think it would be a monopoly.

Choosing other options is the best choice.

PaulRobeson1926: Shameful Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm
DjLorraine: Thanks for bringing this subject to light Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm
Deano de los Muertos: I consider it just plain lazy to use these apps. Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
zachary: If these apps didn't exist, where would these riders/drivers work?

For instance, food delivery was never a universal service from restaurants, but now that it is possible with a technology integration, everyone has it.

Deano de los Muertos:

↳ zachary @6:19

Either, doesn’t matter Avatar 6:20pm
Lesyeuxheureux: The Gig economy mostly benefits the tech companies. I drove for Uber for 3 years before the pandemic and (aside from meeting some interesting people and getting to know the metro area better), it was the worst employer/“employee” relationship I’ve ever experienced. I see people flying through the supermarket filling Instacart orders and can see their stress. Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:22pm
Spikey BXL: it's all modern slavery, really   6:25pm
Brianne from Asbury Park✨✨: As an Uber Eats / door dash driver, hearing these revelations are crazy. It’s an easy income if your record is clean. But takes a toll on your vehicle bad.and gas is on us to buy. Tip your drivers well, they risk their lives for your tacos 😂😭 Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
Peter from Saranac Lake NY:

↳ Deano de los Muertos @6:18

Agree. The only time I've used them was immediately following knee replacement surgery, when I couldn't drive. I live alone so no one could run the errand, and the cat can't reach the pedals.   6:26pm
kevlicki: It’s a shame theres not a worker owned app that could compete against the VC funded ones. Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
Deano de los Muertos: when I worked in Hoboken, people would often try to take advantage of our delivery guy. I once went to a place around the corner that had accepted a delivery they didn’t order, and fully admitted to just stealing it, and didn’t tip him   6:32pm
Bay Ridge Danny: This man is a true modern-day patriot. Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Deano de los Muertos:

↳ Peter from Saranac Lake NY @6:26

I never order delivery, but in that scenario, I would just contact the restaurant directly and order. Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Kat in the chat: This is a great show, thank you Mark Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
Webhamster Henry: Well this is pretty brutal - probably
a good basis for a longer piece. I don't use deliver services, but I know they are used a whole lot. Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Bob Tankenstein: Very moving show today, Mark Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
zachary:

↳ Deano de los Muertos @6:20

Food is food. Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
DjLorraine: Im not a fan of facial recognition Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
zachary: I am curious if people have approached the problem from a local level instead of a global solution.

I'll need to see what I can find.

  6:43pm
Marie de Chicago: Sounds like they want to eliminate workers Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
Webhamster Henry: These delivery algorithms should be cleanroom developed and picked up to be run by accountable organizations (or govenments, or as an extension of the Postal system). Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
dale: i'll bet these companies can't wait for cheaper drones to fly food to a customer.   6:45pm
Marie de Chicago: talk about greed--how about some human decency?   6:46pm
kevlicki: Zachary per your q @6:18 I wonder if these folks would have typically gotten jobs in the “back of house” at restaurants.
Does more delivery mean less dishes to wash?   6:46pm
Marie de Chicago: they are cruel Avatar 6:46pm
Busbiker:

↳ dale @6:44

Hard to drone food in cities, though.   6:47pm
Andrew in Toronto: Fantastic show!

chris in the redwoods: it is stories like this that make me regret never going to law school.
great show, Mark. thank you! Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Webhamster Henry:

↳ Busbiker @6:46

There would need to be a drone traffic system to cover the scale they'd need. More externalities, of course. Drones are totally inappropriate for anywhere but places with big empty driveways.   6:49pm
hendrix wolfbat: My question is. Is this all over the country or only in New York where they've been able to get these rules put in?   6:49pm
Marie de Chicago: Viva Los Deliveristas Unidos!   6:49pm
Sam: Always pay tips in cash. And never get food delivered. Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:49pm
Ken From Hyde Park: Food trucks with a set of flying drones to deliver the food packages the last half-mile. Avatar 6:50pm
Busbiker:

↳ dale @6:48

They’ll probably just keep trying to exploit people whose only choice is to work those sorts of jobs.   6:52pm
Marie de Chicago: We need transparency in algorithms that affect large numbers of people Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
PaulRobeson1926: Shameful. Yes   6:53pm
Marie de Chicago: Like I work in advertising (sorry) and they regularly cull senior people and replace them with younger, less experienced people Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Deano de los Muertos: Very interesting show, thanks Mark! Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Webhamster Henry:

↳ Busbiker @6:50

The idea is to be in the equivalent of Postal union.   6:54pm
Sam: Yeah, uber totally eats.   6:55pm
Bob Tankenstein: Thanks, Mark! Great work   6:55pm
Marie de Chicago: Lyft has continued to raise their prices at every turn Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm
Micheal: There are still many restaurants in NYC that use their own non-app delivery people. Use them and pay tips in Cash. Thanks for such an informative show, Mark.   6:56pm
Marie de Chicago: restaurants used to have delivery staff, right?   6:57pm
Sam:

↳ Marie de Chicago @6:55

They prefer to call it lyfting their prices.   6:57pm
