The bones (utility components) of the government are pretty good in the United States. Great Bill of Rights. States have the ability to have their own constitutions and laws, allowing variance. Threshold for engaging politically are incredibly low. Being a candidate has minimum requirements. Lots of potential.

I would like to see law that isn't so easily painted over as mere irritating opinion. Independent states can definitely be a bulwark against central criminality. But the Supreme Court looks pretty gelatinous lately, and that along with the ongoing building of a private army/police force to suppress dissent, makes many of those systematic selling points seem vestigial. Of course, we are at a nexus in history where things could go either way. The checks and balances, with an eye toward true messy democracy, were something to be proud of, because they were a proven success. I'd like to believe that still exists, and I'd like my old confidence back. So I can stop looking over my shoulder.

I live in a flight path about 2 mi from a major int'l airport and in the early aughts, the regional airport commission outfitted all homes with triple-pane windows, insulation, mini-split ACs at no cost to the homeowners. of course, you can't soundproof a jet engine in the sky, and the homes were there first. contrast that with the open contempt these tech companies have toward communities, and the fact that effects could be blunted

Saltonstall @6:44

StringOFperils @6:37
Thanks, StringOFperils.
Laws can always be changed though. That's the paradox of the legislative process in a republic. Anything written into law can be changed at any time. When an election cycle rolls around, make changes to the personnel elected in government, encouraging changes to those unelected government employees.
The way you game the Supreme Court is through what constitutionally valid laws are on the books. They can only interpret cases through the Constitution and it rolls down from there to the laws allowed by the Constitution. It's slow. And it's reliant on the work of other branches of government.
Public and private police forces are a difficult question. Who enforces the laws? Some people need to. This is a tough one.
What caused you to lose confidence in the system? Or do you not have confidence in the people running the machinery?
