Meta lets strangers remix your public Instagram photos with AI—here’s how to opt out
Vlad CONSTANTINESCU · 2026-07-10 · via Consumer Insights

Meta’s new Muse Image AI generator let people create AI images based on photos from adult public Instagram accounts simply by mentioning those profiles in Meta AI.

The feature is enabled by default for eligible public accounts, and Instagram does not notify users when their photos are referenced; private profiles and accounts belonging to users under 18 are automatically excluded. To stop Meta AI from reusing your public Instagram photos, you must disable the relevant controls under Sharing and reuse in Instagram’s settings or switch your account to private.

Key takeaways

  • Muse Image lets people reference public Instagram accounts when generating AI images.
  • Adult public accounts are included by default, while private and under-18 accounts are excluded.
  • Instagram users are not notified when their public photos are used in image generation.
  • Public-account holders must change their reuse settings or make their accounts private to prevent this use.

Public Instagram profiles become AI source material

Meta has introduced Muse Image, its first image-generation model developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs. The model, available through Meta AI, powers new creative effects in Instagram Stories in the United States and image generation in WhatsApp in select countries.

Muse Image can combine several visual references in one prompt, including people, clothing, objects and environments. Its most controversial feature lets users @-mention a public Instagram account so Meta AI can draw from that profile’s public photos when creating a new image. The account owner receives no notification when their content is used.

Privacy experts challenge the default

For adult users with public Instagram accounts, the reuse setting is enabled by default. Meta says private accounts and accounts of people under 18 are excluded, while public-account holders can disable the feature and report generated content that violates its rules.

Privacy advocates argue that the system reverses meaningful consent by requiring people to discover and deactivate a new use of photographs they may have posted years ago. They also warn that children shown in photos published by an adult’s public account may not receive the same automatic protection, an issue Meta had not publicly clarified when the criticism emerged.

The risks extend beyond embarrassing edits. Images built from a recognizable person’s public posts could be used for harassment, impersonation, fabricated endorsements or deceptive social-media content, even when the output does not violate a platform rule immediately. Meta says Muse Image includes safeguards intended to block policy-breaking generations.

How to stop Meta AI reusing your Instagram posts

Instagram users who want to block this form of reuse can open the app’s settings, select Sharing and reuse, and disable the controls that allow the use of posts and Reels for AI image generation. Turning an account private offers broader protection because strangers can no longer reference its public content through Muse Image.

The change only controls Meta’s new generation feature; it does not erase the wider exposure created by years of public posting. Users should also review old posts, limit identifiable information and report suspicious AI images that misuse their likeness.

Creators and other public-facing users can strengthen their overall defenses with Bitdefender Security for Creators, which protects social accounts, content and devices. Bitdefender Digital Identity Protection can also help users monitor their digital footprint and exposed personal information. Neither replaces Instagram’s privacy controls, so users should still disable AI reuse or make their account private.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Can I turn off Meta AI on Instagram?

You cannot completely remove Meta AI from Instagram, but you can limit specific AI features. To stop Muse Image from using your public posts and Reels, open Settings and activity > Sharing and reuse, disable the AI image-generation permissions, or make your account private.

Is there Meta AI in Instagram?

Yes, Meta AI is integrated into Instagram and may appear in search, chats, support features and creative tools, depending on your country and account. Meta’s Muse Image generator can also reference eligible adult public Instagram profiles when creating AI images.

How can I prevent Meta from using my Instagram images in AI?

Open Instagram and go to Settings and activity > Sharing and reuse, then disable the controls that allow your posts and Reels to be used for AI image generation. Making your account private also prevents other users from referencing your public profile through Muse Image, although it will not remove images that have already been generated.

How do I opt out of Instagram AI?

To opt out of Muse Image reuse, disable the relevant options under Sharing and reuse in Instagram’s settings. If you live in the European Union, you can also submit Meta’s separate objection form to object to your public content and Meta AI interactions being used for AI-model training.
