Colorado Rockies vs. New York Mets prediction, pick for M...
Dan Johnson · 2026-05-08 · via DraftKings Network

Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the Colorado Rockies and the New York Mets.

The Mets and Rockies stay at Coors Field with the series already tilted toward traffic, late stress and crooked-number pressure. New York just put together its cleanest offensive night of the trip in a 10-5 win, while Colorado kept enough heat in the game to make the ninth inning matter. The setting matters: warmer, cleaner conditions than the frigid opener, a park that turns ordinary contact into gap pressure, and two pitching staffs carrying profiles that fit Denver’s run-inflating personality. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Colorado Rockies and the New York Mets.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Rockies vs. Mets prediction, preview

Jose Quintana’s 4.07 ERA already looks ordinary, and the indicators underneath are louder: 5.31 xERA, 6.31 FIP, 6.04 xFIP, an 11.4% strikeout rate, 10.5% walk rate, 9.9% barrel rate, .344 wOBA, .359 xwOBA, 20.5-degree average launch angle and 40.7% sweet-spot rate allowed. That is a brutal Coors blend: free baserunners, low swing-and-miss, lifted contact and enough barrel leakage to make every traffic inning feel unstable. Christian Scott brings better swing-and-miss, yet his early 2026 shape still carries Coors volatility: five walks in 6.1 innings, a 4.26 ERA, 4.70 xERA, 91.0 mph average exit velocity allowed, 38.5% hard-hit rate and a 7.7% barrel rate. His strikeout pitch can erase pockets, and the walk/contact mix gives Colorado a clear runway to its side of the number.

New York’s lineup has enough right-handed structure to punish Quintana’s command and contact profile. Mark Vientos is the cleanest split fit at .300/.323/.500/.823 against left-handed pitching, Marcus Semien sits at .321/.367/.393, and Tyrone Taylor brings a .519 SLG with two HR in 27 AB in the split. Juan Soto’s lefty numbers have been quiet, yet his leadoff homer Wednesday still matters because his plate discipline forces Quintana into the exact baserunner-and-count stress that plays up at altitude. Bo Bichette, Francisco Alvarez, Austin Slater and Andy Ibáñez add more right-handed contact pockets, giving the Mets multiple ways to pressure a pitcher with a thin K-BB margin. New York has scored 26 runs over its last five with 42 hits, eight doubles, six HR and 15 walks, a timely Coors awakening after a choppier last-10 offensive profile.

Colorado’s side gives this total its better shape. Mickey Moniak has mauled right-handed pitching at .368/.417/.782/1.198 with nine HR in 87 AB, and TJ Rumfield’s .301/.365/.524/.889 split gives the middle another real damage lane. Troy Johnston adds a .360/.424/.528 line, Edouard Julien is at .313/.406/.446, Tyler Freeman is reaching at a .407 clip, and Jake McCarthy brings speed and extra-base pressure that plays especially well in this outfield. Colorado’s 100 strikeouts over the last 10 add volatility, yet that same stretch includes 45 runs, 87 hits, 16 doubles, three triples, 11 HR, 36 walks, a .334 OBP and .416 SLG. Wednesday’s 10-5 loss had the right over texture: five Rockies runs, 11 men left on base, a 3-for-13 RISP mark, and enough traffic to keep reopening the game.

Mets vs. Rockies pick, best bet

The number is the caution. 11.0 as a total demands conversion, and Scott’s strikeout shape can mute Colorado early if the Rockies chase above the zone. The Mets’ lefty split also has enough unevenness to make the full-game over sharper than a heavier Mets-only team total. Vientos, Semien and Taylor fit the matchup best, while Soto, Bichette, Alvarez and Baty have carried quieter split lines. That pushes the bet toward distribution rather than one-club dependency. The F5 over 5.5 has a real case because both starters can create trouble, though the full-game total captures the most combustible part of the handicap: Colorado’s bullpen has recent workload and run-prevention stress across Senzatela, Mejia, Vodnik, Bernardino and Hill, while New York’s pen has also leaned on Weaver, Raley, Brazobán, Williams and Myers over the last week.

Best bet: Mets/Rockies over 11 (-105). Quintana is the match, Coors is the oxygen, Scott’s command profile gives Colorado a credible lane, and both bullpens add late-game fuel. The cleanest failure mode is Scott finding early swing-and-miss while New York strands Vientos/Semien traffic against Quintana; the stronger game script points toward repeated traffic, extra-base contact and at least one late inning that turns the total loose. New York has the cleaner six-run path, Colorado has enough left-handed production to reach four or five, and the bullpen layer gives the over its final push.

Projected score: Mets 8, Rockies 6.

Best bet: Mets -1.5 (-105) at Rockies
