PITCHER

Stud

MacKenzie Gore, Texas Rangers at Athletics, $8,600 — Fantasy nerds across the globe have been intrigued by Gore for years, as he could throw hard and miss bats. Unfortunately, he didn’t always know where he was throwing the ball and blowups could be more than occasional. Last season, it looked like he finally broke out, but he reverted back to the same old Gore in the second half. Through three starts and 16.1 innings this season, the breakout looks real as the strikeout rate is a whopping 39.7% while the walk rate is a career-low 7.9%. The 2.77 FIP supports the 2.76 ERA. Could Gore revert back once again? Absolutely. Could he also finally break through? For sure. Until we get evidence otherwise, we should treat Gore as the stud that he has been so far. The matchup is also a fantastic one as the Athletics are second in strikeout rate, 22nd in wOBA and 24th in wRC+.

Value

Ryan Weathers, New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels, $7,000 — Weathers entered the majors with a 94 mph fastball and a strikeout rate in the teens. Three seasons ago, the velocity jumped to 96 mph and the strikeout rate went over 20%. Through three starts and 16 innings this season, the strikeout rate is 26.5% and the FIP is 1.83. And that’s with a .378 BABIP. Now he gets to face an Angels team that is seventh in strikeout rate.

INFIELD

Stud

Matt Olson, Atlanta Braves vs. Miami Marlins, $4,600 — Through 71 plate appearances, Olson is slashing .290/.380/.613. The strikeout rate is high at 28.2% and the batting average is fueled by a .368 BABIP, but the ISO is a whopping .323. Olson has an average exit velocity of 92.3 mph, the barrel rate is at 21.4% and the bat speed is 74.5 mph. Max Meyer has a 22.4% strikeout rate but the walk rate is 11.9%. The K-BB% is only 6.1% against lefties while the FIP is 5.19. The probabilities that he misses a spot and leaves one over the heart of the plate are high, and Olson demolishes those.

Amed Rosario, New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels, $3,200 — Rosario has actually been better against right-handed pitching this season, but over his career, he’s been much better against left-handed pitching, posting a .166 ISO and 120 wRC+ compared to .112 and 85, respectively. Rosario has been the short side of the platoon for the Yankees, but is often batting fifth when inserted into the lineup. Reid Detmers is a lefty.

OUTFIELD

Stud

Yordan Alvarez, Houston Astros vs. Colorado Rockies, $6,200 — Alvarez is slashing a ridiculous .340/.500/.755 with an obscene .415 ISO! The walk rate is 20.8% while the strikeout rate is only 11.1%. He has six home runs in 72 plate appearances. Michael Lorenzen shut down the Astros two games ago in Colorado, going 5.2 innings, walking two, striking out four and allowing only one earned run on seven hits. Baseball, it happens. I’m not expecting a repeat performance. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise if he gets clobbered in this one.

Owen Caissie, Miami Marlins at Atlanta Braves, $3,600 — Caissie has a 37% strikeout rate. No bueno. The ISO is .250 and he’s clubbed two home runs in 46 plate appearances. Yippee! Against right-handed pitching this season, the slash is .281/.333/.563 with a .281 ISO and 144 wRC+. Reynaldo Lopez has been better against lefties this season, but the K-BB% is only 3.1% while the xFIP is 5.07. All three home runs have been served up to righties, but it’s only a matter of time before that normalizes.
