MacKenzie Gore, Texas Rangers vs. Kansas City Royals ($8,600) — I initially had Max Meyer here, but his price increased $1,300 dollars from his last outing. Granted, it was a 32.8 FPTS performance against the New York Mets, the same team he is facing on Friday, but I have some doubts that he can replicate that production and we are paying for a ceiling outcome. The volatility for Gore is immense because he has too much Ricky Vaughn in him. The walk rate is 11.2% and he’s put up fewer than 20 FPTS six times this season, with four of those in the single-digits. That said, the strikeout rate is 26.6% and he has five games over 20 FPTS, with a high of 31.4 FPTS. Kansas City is 21st in ISO, 26th in wOBA and 27th in wRC+.
Nick Martinez, Tampa Bay Rays vs. Los Angeles Angels ($7,600) — Martinez has a 1.51 ERA and has allowed only four home runs in 59.2 innings. He’s been lucky with a .266 BABIP and 92.9% strand rate. The FIP is much higher at 3.44. The strikeout rate is only 14.9% but the walk rate is only 5%. The average exit velocity is 87 mph, barrel rate is 6.8% and the hard hit rate is 32.3%. He faces an Angels team that is first in strikeouts, 22nd in wOBA and 22nd in wRC+. Martinez has put up double-digit FPTS in eight of 10 starts with two of those over 20 FPTS.
Travis Bazzana, Cleveland Guardians vs. Boston Red Sox ($3,900) — The highly-touted rookie has had a good start to his MLB career. The slash is .302/.407/.458 with a 13.3% walk rate, 16.8% strikeout rate and .156 ISO. Some of it is fueled by a .351 BABIP, but the 78th percentile sprint speed is legit. He has three home runs, 12 runs, 11 RBI and seven stolen bases in 113 plate appearances. After starting the season down toward the bottom of the batting order, Bazzana is now leading off. Against right-handed pitching, Bazzana has as 169 wRC+ with a .172 ISO. Over the last four games, he’s put up 12, 11, 5 and 20 FPTS. Brayan Bello has a 5.58 FIP and 6% K-BB%. Against lefties, the FIP is 7.79 while the K-BB% is 0%. Eight of the 10 home runs allowed have come off the bat of a lefty.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Guardians ($2,300) — With Trevor Story injured, IKF has been starting and been productive. Over the last seven games, he’s put up at least 7 FPTS in four of those contests, including 13 and 28 FPTS. Slade Cecconi has a 4.67 FIP and 10.7% K-BB% in 57.1 innings.
Ian Happ, Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals ($3,900) — Against right-handed pitching, Happ has hit eight of the 11 home runs and the wRC+ is 142 with a .181 ISO. Kyle Leahy is allowing a 92.1 mph average exit velocity and 11.7% barrel rate. Against lefties, the FIP is 6.03 while the K-BB% is 5.6%. Six of the eight home runs allowed have come off the bat of a lefty.
Colton Cowser, Baltimore Orioles vs. Toronto Blue Jays ($2,300) — The surface stats look atrocious for Cowser, as the strikeout rate is 33% while the slash is .210/.298/.320. The average exit velocity is only 85.8 mph while the launch angle is 5.4 degrees. The bat speed is 74.6 mph, though. Over the last 10 games (25 plate appearances), the slash is .348/.400/.739 with a .391 ISO! The strikeout rate is still high at 36% and much of the production is fueled by a .455 BABIP, but he’s on a heater and hit three home runs over that span.
