Odds: -105 | Opponent: Arizona Diamondbacks
The terrible, horrible, no good, very bad season for Zac Gallen continues tonight in Tampa. Through 16 starts and 79.2 innings, Gallen has a 6.10 ERA with an xERA of 5.70 and 4.97 FIP. His strikeouts are way down to a 5.8 K/9 despite a career average of 9.2. He’s also allowing a career-high 47% hard-hit rate, which is more than a 10% jump from his career-average of 36%. He’s also coming off his worst start of the season, allowing nine runs on 12 hits through four innings against the Twins. To be fair, his 20.25 ERA is no where close to his xERA of 5.78 in that start, but a 5.78 xERA isn’t exactly a badge of honor either. Simply put, he looks as if he has nothing in the tank.
One of the biggest issues for Gallen has been left-handed bats. They’ve tagged him for a .399 wOBA with a 5.26 FIP and six of the 13 home runs he’s allowed. The Rays will be very left-handed heavy, likely using six or seven in the lineup. That’s bad news for Gallen, who simply can’t get lefties out at this juncture. Once he departs, which could be early on, the Diamondbacks bullpen has been a mess themselves. Over the past week, they’ve combined for a 6.91 ERA with an xERA of 5.95 and a 1.6 HR/9 through 27.1 innings.
Odds: -108 | Opponent: Colorado Rockies
The Twins are expected to be one of the highest scoring teams of the night, as they face Tomoyuki Sugano and the Rockies in Minnesota. Against lefties, Sugano has allowed a .379 wOBA with a 6.31 FIP and a 2.2 HR/9. Ironically, despite pitching in Coors Field for half his starts, he’s allowed more home runs (9) than at home (5). Clemens has been hitting for a ton of power, particularly against right-handed pitching. He has a .242 ISO with a .347 wOBA and a 120 wRC+. That power has also come a lot in June, as his .256 ISO is the highest of any month this season thus far.

Odds: +100 | Opponent: Philadelphia Phillies
Thornton is making his second major league start and it’s a tough one against the Phillies. In his debut against the Nationals, Thornton went 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Tonight, he’ll face a very good hitting ball club against lefties, as tonight’s expected Phillies lineup has a combined .346 wOBA with a .196 ISO. Thornton didn’t exactly post impressive numbers in the minors before being recalled either. In AA and AAA, he combined for 55 innings and had a 4.25 ERA with an xERA of 6.68 with a 4.43 FIP. I’m expecting another short outing for the rookie, which is why I’m taking him to go under five innings completed in New York tonight.
