OpenAI upgrades ChatGPT and Codex with GPT-5.5: ‘a new class of intelligence for real work’
Zac Hall · 2026-04-24 · via 9to5Mac

OpenAI is capping off a busy week of announcements with the release of GPT-5.5, its latest model upgrade for ChatGPT and Codex. The company calls its new model “a new class of intelligence for real work.”

OpenAI says GPT-5.5 is its smartest and most intuitive to use model yet

GPT-5.5 lands seven weeks after the release of GPT-5.4, which arrived on March 5.

OpenAI says the newest model “understands what you’re trying to do faster” and that it can “carry more of the work itself” compared to earlier models.

Specifically, OpenAI says GPT-5.5 is better at multi-part tasks that require multiple steps, like planning, using tools, and checking its work.

OpenAI highlights gains in these areas with GPT-5.5:

  • agentic coding
  • computer use
  • knowledge work
  • early scientific research

The company says GPT-5.5 delivers boosts in these areas without giving up speed or using more tokens.

Pricing changes with GPT-5.5

However, GPT-5.5 does come with a higher price for usage than GPT-5.4, OpenAI notes:

While GPT‑5.5 is priced higher than GPT‑5.4, it is both more intelligent and much more token efficient. In Codex, we have carefully tuned the experience so GPT‑5.5 delivers better results with fewer tokens than GPT‑5.4 for most users, while continuing to offer generous usage across subscription levels.

OpenAI also includes a note about GPT-5.5 safeguards and trusted partners:

We are releasing GPT‑5.5 with our strongest set of safeguards to date, designed to reduce misuse while preserving access for beneficial work. We evaluated this model across our full suite of safety and preparedness frameworks, worked with internal and external redteamers, added targeted testing for advanced cybersecurity and biology capabilities, and collected feedback on real use cases from nearly 200 trusted early-access partners before release.

GPT-5.5 Thinking and Pro

GPT-5.5 includes both Thinking and Pro model variants.

OpenAI says Thinking “unlocks faster help for harder problems, with smarter and more concise answers to help you move through complex work more efficiently.”

Meanwhile, the company says early testers praise Pro for being a “step up in both the difficulty and quality of work ChatGPT can take on, with latency improvements that make it much more practical for demanding tasks.”

The release comes with a fun 40-second video that shows off GPT-5.5 in Codex:

OpenAI says GPT-5.5 is rolling out starting today for ChatGPT and Codex. Here’s a breakdown from OpenAI on the release availability:

Today, GPT‑5.5 is rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT and Codex, and GPT‑5.5 Pro is rolling out to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT. We’ll bring GPT‑5.5 and GPT‑5.5 Pro to the API very soon.

In ChatGPT, GPT‑5.5 Thinking is available to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. GPT‑5.5 Pro, designed for even harder questions and higher-accuracy work, is available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users.

In Codex, GPT‑5.5 is available for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Go plans with a 400K context window. GPT‑5.5 is also available in Fast mode, generating tokens 1.5x faster for 2.5x the cost.

With GPT-5.5, Codex now gets more of the job done across the browser, files, docs, and your computer.

We've expanded browser use so Codex can interact with web apps, and test flows, click through pages, capture screenshots, and iterate on what it sees until it completes the… pic.twitter.com/rUguNHIcIB

More from OpenAI this week

The announcement will follow a busy few days for the company. Last week, Codex for Mac was overhauled with computer use and more features that go beyond agentic coding.

This week, OpenAI released the vastly better ChatGPT Images 2 for higher quality image generation.
