In the spirit of patch-first-ask-questions-later, here's a patch

I put some notes in RATIONALE.md, which I thought was too big/brainfarty to include here, but still useful.

So this is quite minimal, and only touches sp_selected_path_do_offset, whereas -if I understand correctly-, more actions are to-be-converted.
