Cronulla RSL Club says police have laid charges following an investigation into the alleged theft of $1.46 million over two years.

The club's president John Brown and chief executive Nathan Whiteside advised members of the matter in an email.

Police later confirmed a man, 26, had been charged, and it would be alleged fraudulent transactions resulted in a loss to the club of $367,230 over five months to mid-February this year.

The club executive's email to members read:

"You may be aware of reports relating to the alleged misappropriation of funds from the Club.

"Cronulla RSL is limited in what it can say, as there has been an arrest and charges laid. However, it is important that you learn the facts from us.

"Cronulla RSL identified suspicious activity and reported an alleged theft of funds to NSW Police.

"Following a Police investigation, an individual has been arrested and charged with several counts of theft and fraud.

"The extent of that theft will be reported in our annual report, due to be released in the coming weeks. It totals $1.46 million over 2 years.

"We appreciate this is likely to be unsettling news for many in the Cronulla RSL community, as it has been for us.

"At this stage we are unable to share further details about the alleged theft, but will be sure to update members on this matter at the appropriate time.

"The team at Cronulla RSL remains committed to providing the best possible experience and services for members, their guests and our extended community."

The police statement said:

"A man has been charged with fraud offences in Sydney's south.

"In March 2026, detectives attached to Sutherland Shire Police Area Command formed Strike Force Peatling, following reports of alleged fraudulent transactions made by an employee of a licensed venue in Cronulla.

"Following extensive enquiries, about 11.25am on Wednesday 8 April 2026, police arrested a 26-year-old man at Kogarah Police Station.

"He was charged with dishonestly obtain financial benefit by deception and knowingly deals with proceeds of crime.

"The man was refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court today (Wednesday 8 April 2026), where he was granted conditional bail, to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 4 June 2026."

"Police will allege in court the fraudulent transactions were made between 27 October 2025 and 14 February 2026, whilst the man was employed at the licensed venue, resulting in the loss of $367,230 to the venue."
