The Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute (CPI) is one of eight interdisciplinary projects that have been selected to advance research and initiatives to address the world’s most pressing challenges, such as cybersecurity.

The University of Waterloo’s Global Futures Fund is a key initiative supporting the University’s long-term strategic vision. Through a rigorous, multi-stage selection process, the recipients were selected from a highly competitive pool of 63 initial submissions and 15 full proposals.

CPI will receive $200,000 over three years and is committed to advancing information security and privacy through education, conferences, and governance workshops, in collaboration with industry partners.

“Since 2018, CPI has been helping to nurture research and training in cybersecurity and privacy across all faculties. The new Global Futures Fund grant will allow the Institute to continue its mission,” says Dr. N. Asokan, executive director of CPI and computer science professor at Waterloo.

With 70+ faculty members and a vision to be internationally recognized as a leading research institute, CPI’s technical expertise in cybersecurity ranks consistently among the top 20 in the world.

"The Global Futures Fund proposal required significant effort from colleagues across different faculties at Waterloo. We are very grateful for their help,” says Dr. Anindya Sen, Associate Dean (Faculty of Arts), Co-operative Education and Planning, and former interim executive director of CPI. “The result is a series of new and exciting projects that will create interdisciplinary opportunities for research, graduate student training, and engagement with private and government stakeholders."
