Sixty-four-year-old Bể earns a living in Hanoi travelling door to door by bicycle and collecting recyclables. She’s part of an informal workforce of mostly elderly women across Vietnam who perform this difficult – and often stigmatised – yet essential task without formal labour protections. Over the years, she’s witnessed the country’s development through the objects that people throw away. As the Hanoi-based Dutch filmmaker Kate Villevoye captures in her short documentary Mud Below, Sun Above, this rapid transformation has led not only to overburdened landfills and rampant pollution, but also to changes in Vietnamese culture’s relationship with commerce. Following Bể as she goes about her work, Villevoye captures her difficult yet dignified life on the fringes of society, astutely observing the shifts in values and behaviours that Vietnam’s economic boom has brought.
