Jonathan is never what you’d call a cowardly man. In fact, it had been a long time since he last felt the adrenaline rush induced by anything remotely like fear. He had seen plenty of real life nasty shit, so much that things that go bump in the night was the least of his concerns. That’s why it felt like a good idea when he saw the job posting online. Some rich kid (probably) who ate his share with nothing better to do was hiring somebody to investigate that derelict house on the edge of town, promising a handsome pile of cash. Plus, whatever item of value Jonathan managed to dig up in the process would be his to keep.

The house, the one that had been a giant eyesore but was somehow never demolished, sat in the middle of a small thicket that used to be its yard. Now standing in the long-abandoned living room that felt quite the opposite of living, Jonathan began to have second thoughts. He was not exactly scared. It’s just that being in a hall occupied by nothing other than mold and whatever insects, being surrounded by windows that let in more shadows than light, it made him feel edgy. But first things first. Edgy or not, he must find a serviceable room in this place to spend his night, or nights, depending on how this gig went. Maybe one of the upstairs rooms?

ChatGPT:

Jonathan made his way up the creaky stairs, his flashlight illuminating the way. The musty smell of decay grew stronger with each step he took, and he couldn't help but wonder what kind of horrors the house had seen over the years. As he reached the landing, he heard a faint shuffling noise coming from one of the rooms down the hall. He approached slowly, his hand hovering over the handle of his flashlight, ready to use it as a weapon if needed. The shuffling grew louder and more frantic, until suddenly it stopped. The silence was deafening.

Jonathan cautiously pushed open the door, his flashlight beam illuminating the room. To his surprise, he saw a small figure huddled in the corner, shivering and sobbing. He approached slowly, keeping his flashlight trained on the figure. "Hey there," he said softly, "are you okay?" The figure looked up at him, revealing a young girl with tear-streaked cheeks and matted hair. "Please help me," she whispered, "I've been trapped here for days." Jonathan felt a wave of compassion wash over him. He knew he had to get the girl out of the house as quickly as possible. But first, he needed to find out how she had ended up here in the first place.

“W-what’s your name?” Jonathan asked. He was expecting all sort of things, but a living human was not among them, not to mention one of such a young age. “OK, kiddo.” He put up his nicest face and sat down beside her, hoping to calm her. “I, um-“, there were so many things he wanted ask but for the moment he didn’t know where to start.

“Say, this is just an old empty house. I don’t see a living soul here. What do you mean by trapped? By whom?” He looked into the girl’s startled eyes and realized he was overwhelming her with questions. The girl made a false start, then was gagged by an outburst of sobbing. Jonathan caressed her hair. Poor thing, she was burning, of either all this excitement or a rising fever. “Shhh,” he said, “Let’s get this done one thing at a time. For starters, what’s your name?”

ChatGPT:

The girl took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. "M-my name is Lily," she said between sobs. "I came here with my friends to explore the house. But then they left me behind and I've been stuck here ever since. I've been trying to find my way out, but every time I think I've found the way, I end up back in this room." Jonathan's heart ached for the girl. He knew he had to get her out of the house as soon as possible.

"Lily, I'm going to get you out of here," he said, his voice firm and reassuring. "But first, I need to know more about what happened. How did your friends leave you behind, and why haven't they come back for you?" Lily hesitated, looking down at her hands. "I don't know," she said softly. "We were exploring the house and I heard a noise. When I turned around, they were gone. I've been trying to find them ever since, but I can't seem to get out of this house." Jonathan frowned, a sense of unease creeping over him. This house was more sinister than he had originally thought. He needed to find a way out, and fast.

“Look, it’s straightforward enough. Let’s just walk downstairs and there’s the ga-“ Jonathan was about to turn around and lead the way when he realized he was getting ahead of himself again. “Oh, right. Can you walk, sweetie?” He never thought much of himself as a babysitter. Married, divorced, never gave a thought about kids. Funny this moment here in this creepy house, he caught the beginning of an illusion (or delusion?) that he might make a okay father.

Lily nodded, and stood up on unsteady feet. Jonathan held her little hand and led her down the moldy hallway toward the once-grand stairs. Oak planks groaned under their weight, but the trip down was uneventful enough. They were in the foyer, less than a dozen feet away from the front gate and the sunshine, or the lack thereof, beyond the threshold. Jonathan checked his phone. 5:47 PM. Beyond the wall of grotesque trees the sun must be sinking already. Ain’t much daylight left. He took a deep breath and gently tugged Lily’s arm. “Come on, sweetie.” He said as they approached the threshold. “Don’t be afraid. See? This is as easy as pie. Nothing’s gonna stop you fr-“

ChatGPT:

Jonathan was about to step outside when he felt a sudden chill run down his spine. He stopped in his tracks, a sense of dread washing over him. Something was not right. He turned to look back at Lily, but she was no longer there. He spun around, frantically searching the room, but she was nowhere to be seen. He heard a faint shuffling noise coming from the shadows, and he realized that he was not alone in the house. He pulled out his flashlight, ready to face whatever was lurking in the darkness. But before he could take a step, he felt a hand on his shoulder. He spun around, ready to defend himself, but to his surprise, he found himself face to face with Lily. "Jonathan," she said, her voice trembling, "I don't want to be here anymore. Please, let's go." Jonathan took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. He knew that he had to get them both out of the house as quickly as possible, before whatever was in the shadows caught up with them. They made their way to the front door, Jonathan leading the way, his flashlight beam illuminating the path. When they finally stepped outside, they both breathed a sigh of relief. The sun was setting, casting an orange glow over the sky, but they were finally free from the horrors of the house.

“See? We’re out! Now let me take you home. Where do you-“ He turned around to address Lily but only to find her gone. One second she was there, the next she’s not. Jonathan turned around a few circles on the spot just to make sure he wasn’t missing anything. “Damn.” He muttered under this breath, examining the ground for any trace that Lily might have left. Nope. It was as if she vanished into thin air.

“Help!” a faint voice coming from inside the house. Sounded mighty familiar. Without thinking about it, Jonathan dashed into the gloomy hall and up the stairs. There she was, Lily, in the same room where Jonathan found her mere minutes ago, tears streaming. “What the fuck?” He was confused. “Pardon the language, sweetie, but, damn! How did you get back here?” “I d-don’t know.” Lily wept. “Every time I try to walk out, I end up in this room!”

Jonathan scratched his head. “But it can’t be! I just walked out, right? If this house is really trying to keep inside, and that’s a very much stretched if, I shouldn’t be able to do that. Unless…” An idea struck. “Unless YOU were making a difference. Now think about it, Lily. What did you do since you entered this house? Try to recall every detail.”

ChatGPT:

Lily thought for a moment, her brow furrowed in concentration. "I don't know," she said finally. "We came in through the front door, and we were exploring the rooms. But then I heard a noise and my friends were gone. I've been trying to find a way out ever since, but I always end up back in this room." Jonathan nodded, deep in thought. "Okay, let's try something," he said. "Close your eyes and think about your friends. Think about being outside, in the sun, free from this house. Can you do that?" Lily nodded, closing her eyes. Jonathan watched as a look of determination came over her face. He took her hand and led her to the door. "Come on," he said, "we're getting out of here. Just keep thinking about being outside." They made their way down the stairs, through the foyer, and finally to the front door. This time, as they stepped outside, they were both able to stay outside. The sun had set, and the sky was a deep shade of blue. They were free from the haunted house, but Jonathan knew that they would never forget the horrors that they had experienced inside.

“Finally! For God’s sake!” Jonathan uttered a cry of relief. “Told you it ain’t so hard, right?” He looked down and caught the smile blooming over Lily’s face. “I’m Jonathan, by the way. Nice to meet you.” He reached out with a hand, and Lily gingerly gave it a shake. “Hey, you kept saying you’ve been trapped there for a very long time. How long would it be?”

“It felt like forever.” Said Lily.

“When did you go in there?” Jonathan asked.

“Afternoon, about 3 o’clock, maybe, June 17th.”

For a second, Jonathan’s mind went blank. “You are telling me you’ve been for TWO MONTHS?” That’s physically impossible. For one thing, there’s no food or clean water (if any water at all) in that house!

“Huh? What day is it now?” Lily was no less shocked than he was. Jonathan check his phone again. Yeah, he was not dreaming or hallucinating. “September 6.” He said, then added for reasons beyond his ken, “2023.”

“But I went inside on June 17th of 1954!”

ChatGPT:

Jonathan's eyes widened in disbelief. "1954?" he repeated, incredulous. "But that's almost 70 years ago! How is that possible?" He looked at Lily, trying to make sense of what she was saying. "Are you telling me that time works differently in that house?" Lily nodded, her eyes wide with fear. "I don't know how it happened, but every time I tried to find a way out, I just kept going in circles. I thought I was going crazy. But now, after all this time, I'm finally free." Jonathan put an arm around her, trying to comfort her. "It's okay, Lily," he said, "you're safe now. I'll take you home and make sure you're reunited with your family." They made their way out of the thicket and back to the car, both of them deep in thought about the strange events that had just transpired. They had both been changed forever by their experience in the haunted house, and they knew that they would never forget the horrors that they had faced inside.

Rewrite your last paragraph. The story goes nowhere if they're already heading home!

ChatGPT:

Understood! Let me revise the last paragraph to keep the story going:

As they made their way out of the thicket and back to the car, they both felt a sense of unease settle over them. They had been changed forever by their experience in the haunted house, and they knew that they had only scratched the surface of its mysteries. They couldn't shake the feeling that there was still more to discover, more to uncover about the strange and supernatural events that had taken place inside its walls. They looked at each other, a silent understanding passing between them. They both knew that they couldn't simply walk away from this. They had to find out the truth about the haunted house, no matter what the cost.

That's...not very easy to pick up. Can I just leave this thread hanging here and expect you to remember where we left it next time I come back?

ChatGPT:

Of course! I'll be here whenever you're ready to continue the story. Just let me know and I'll pick up right where we left off.
