Geekbench leaves locked CPUID files in %PROGRAMDATA% since v6.7.0 / Geekbench / Discussion Area
adam.trykacz · 2026-07-25 · via Primate Labs: Recent Discussions

Hi,

I’m using the standard Geekbench 7 (currently 7.0.0) on Windows, and I’ve noticed a change in behaviour since version 6.7.0 that I’d like to report.

After running Geekbench and closing it completely, the folder %PROGRAMDATA%\CPUID Software (and its sdk subfolder) remains. Inside are randomly‑named files (e.g., w5NyyxbK9). They cannot be deleted – Windows reports the files are in use. A full system restart is required to remove them.

This did not happen with Geekbench 6.6.0 and earlier – the folder was either cleaned up automatically or not created. The problem appeared with 6.7.0 and persists in 6.7.1 and 7.0.0.

Steps attempted:

- Verified that all Geekbench‑related processes have exited.

- Tried deleting the folder manually as Administrator — the files remain locked, likely by the CPUID driver.

My question is: has something changed in the way Geekbench uses the CPUID SDK from version 6.7.0 onward that causes these files to stay locked? And is there a supported way to either unload the driver after the benchmark, or force the cleanup of these leftover files without rebooting?

Thank you for your help.
