Security Is Driving a Shift from BYOD to COPE—Here’s Why ...

For years, BYOD programs were a practical way to enable mobility. Employees gained flexibility, and organizations benefited from what appeared to be a simple, cost-effective model.

But the environment those programs were built for no longer exists.

Today’s workplace is shaped by AI-powered applications, real-time data access, and an expanding threat landscape at the endpoint. In this context, the device is no longer just a productivity tool—it’s a critical control point for enterprise security.

That reality is forcing a shift.

More organizations are moving to a COPE (Corporately Owned, Personally Enabled) model to regain control over how devices are secured, how data is accessed, and how modern tools are used across the business.

BYOD Has Become Even More of a Security Liability

In a BYOD environment, IT operates with inherent limitations. Even with management tools in place, the organization never fully owns the endpoint—and that gap introduces risk.

Visibility is fragmented. Control is inconsistent. Enforcement depends on a mix of personal behavior and partial policy.

This becomes especially problematic as AI adoption accelerates.

Employees are increasingly using AI tools outside sanctioned environments, often through personal accounts or unmanaged applications—what’s known as “shadow AI.” Sensitive data can move into those tools without oversight, and outputs can be generated and shared without alignment to corporate policies. What begins as a productivity shortcut can quickly become a security exposure.

Recent research by Stratix shows 63% of respondents have experienced a security breach linked to shadow AI, and according to IBM’s 2025 Cost of a Data Breach Report, such incidents added an average of $670,000 to breach costs.  Some 97% of respondents reporting incidents lacked proper AI access controls.  
 
Netskope’s 2025 threat research shows that 47% of AI platform users access these tools through personal, unmonitored accounts, which often lack company data protection controls. Furthermore, Harmonic data indicates that 45.4% of sensitive data prompts are submitted using personal accounts, bypassing security monitoring.  

The core issue is structural. When the device itself isn’t fully governed, the organization cannot reliably control how data is handled.

COPE addresses that at the source. By shifting to corporately owned devices, organizations establish a consistent, enforceable security baseline. Policies are applied at deployment, applications are controlled, and data protection is embedded into the device experience. Instead of trying to manage around variability, IT teams operate within a defined, controlled environment where risk can be actively managed rather than passively monitored.

The “3x Cost” Reality Behind BYOD

BYOD is often justified as a cost-saving strategy. On paper, a monthly stipend appears simple, predictable, and easy to scale.

But that surface-level simplicity masks a much more complex cost structure.

When organizations take a closer look, the true expense of BYOD extends far beyond the stipend itself. Supporting a wide range of personal devices introduces operational inefficiencies that compound over time. IT teams spend more time troubleshooting inconsistent environments. Employees lose productivity when applications don’t perform reliably across devices. Security gaps lead to increased risk exposure—and when incidents occur, the financial impact can be significant.

These hidden costs don’t show up neatly in a budget line item, but they are very real.

In many cases, organizations that fully analyze total cost of ownership—factoring in support overhead, productivity loss, security exposure, and lifecycle inconsistency—find that BYOD can cost up to three times more than a standardized approach.

High-Performance Devices Enable Better AI Workflows

As AI becomes embedded in everyday work, workers need devices that can keep up.

Many of today’s AI workflows rely on real-time processing, whether it’s voice-driven interactions, image recognition, field data capture, or AI-assisted decision-making. These aren’t lightweight tasks. They demand sustained compute power, efficient memory handling, and the ability to process data quickly—often at the edge.

That’s where device quality begins to matter in a meaningful way. By standardizing on high-performance devices like the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra, organizations ensure that every employee has the compute power needed to fully support AI-driven work. Advanced chipsets designed for parallel processing, combined with optimized memory and power management, allow these devices to handle complex tasks directly on the device.

That capability has a direct impact on how work happens.

AI interactions become faster and more responsive because they don’t rely exclusively on cloud processing. Tasks that require real-time input—such as scanning, recognition, or guided workflows—can execute instantly at the edge. Applications run more smoothly, even when multiple processes are active, and battery efficiency supports continuous use throughout the day without interruption.

Just as importantly, strong on-device performance helps keep work within controlled environments. When employees have the tools they need to operate efficiently, there is less incentive to shift tasks to external platforms or unmanaged applications. Performance and security begin to reinforce each other.

In that sense, flagship devices don’t just improve speed—they enable a more reliable and controlled way to adopt AI at scale.

Control Isn’t Optional Anymore—It’s Strategic

The shift from BYOD to COPE ultimately comes down to one thing: control.

  • Control over the endpoint
  • Control over how data is accessed and used
  • Control over how new technologies—especially AI—are introduced into the business

In today’s environment, those controls are not just technical requirements. They are strategic advantages.

Organizations that continue to operate in fragmented, loosely governed device environments will find it increasingly difficult to scale securely, enforce policy consistently, or fully realize the value of AI-driven workflows. The gaps created by variability don’t just introduce risk—they slow progress.

COPE offers a different path. By standardizing devices, embedding security at the foundation, and ensuring every employee has the performance needed for modern work, organizations create an environment that is both controlled and enabling. IT gains visibility and confidence, while employees get tools that work the way they need them to—quickly, reliably, and securely.

That alignment is what makes the model sustainable. This isn’t just a shift in device ownership. It’s a shift in how mobility supports the business. One that replaces variability with consistency, uncertainty with visibility, and reactive management with intentional design.

As AI continues to reshape how work gets done, the organizations that succeed will be the ones that control the environment in which that work happens.
