From a Message I Couldn’t Believe to a Stage I’ll Never Forget
Karishma Gup · 2026-04-23 · via Cisco Blogs

Production control room view of a large Cisco Live event, with multiple monitors displaying the stage and a mixing console in the foreground, overlooking a brightly lit stage and empty audience seating.

When I was asked to present at Cisco Live alongside Jeetu Patel, I remember staring at the message, rereading it just to make sure I hadn’t misunderstood.

Jeetu Patel, our President and Chief Product Officer, is a huge voice in the industry, especially when it comes to his AI-first vision. And here I was, being asked to join him on stage to lead a live demo at the debut of our brand-new data center solution, Nexus Hyperfabric.

That’s the thing about Cisco. Sometimes, it puts you in rooms and on stages you never imagined you’d be on — and sometimes that stage just happens to be in front of tens of thousands of customers, partners, employees, and Cisco leaders at Cisco Live.

From the moment I said yes, everything moved quickly, but never in a way that felt overwhelming. There was this incredible support system around me. From shaping the script to refining the demo, from daily standups to countless rehearsals, I had a strong team alongside me, dedicated to delivering this successfully. And at the same time, I was trusted to bring my own voice into it. That balance, support, and ownership is something I’ve come to deeply appreciate here.

I’ll be honest, I was incredibly invested in preparing for this because I knew I was representing my team, our product, and the impact of the work we’ve built. I also felt a personal drive to set an example that you can thrive in a high-velocity, impactful role while also being a present mother. Being trusted with that kind of responsibility changes how you show up. You care more. You push a little harder.

When I landed in Amsterdam, I went straight to the keynote hall. Walking onto that stage for the first time during rehearsal is something I’ll never forget. It was surreal. The lights, cameras, the scale, the silence before everything begins — it all hit me at once. It was a defining moment.

And then, shortly after, I met Jeetu. What struck me immediately wasn’t just his presence; it was how intentional he was in that moment. Despite everything going on around him, he was fully present. He listened closely, asked thoughtful follow-up questions, and gave feedback that was both sharp and incredibly constructive. It didn’t feel like a quick interaction; it felt like he genuinely cared about helping me do my best.

While we were together, Jeetu paused and asked me something simple, but powerful, “How are you using AI in your day-to-day work?” It wasn’t just a question; it was a window into how he thinks. We spoke about it for a bit, and then he shared a perspective that stayed with me, “If you’re not using AI every day, you’re already behind. The only way to get better is to actually use it, constantly.”

What stood out wasn’t just the message, but how he framed it. It wasn’t pressure, it was about possibility and mindset, and it changed my perspective. I took it as a challenge to stop being a spectator and start being more curious, to experiment more. It pushed me to reflect on myself and be willing to evolve every single day.

As the keynote approached, the rehearsals became more intense. Practicing on stage with Jeetu was an experience in itself. His energy is on another level. Focused, intentional, and incredibly engaging. Watching him speak, I realized that for Jeetu, leadership isn’t just about having a vision; it’s about how he brings that vision to life for others. He didn’t just invite me on the stage for a demo. He gave me a seat at the table, trusting me as a partner in that moment, and that’s a level of mentorship I hadn’t experienced before.

And then came the day of the keynote.

I found myself in the green room — makeup, hair, the full experience — and I couldn’t help but smile. It felt surreal, almost cinematic. But underneath all of that, I had a quiet sense of gratitude for everything that led to that moment. And then, it was time. Stepping onto that stage, everything just clicked. The preparation, the support, the belief — it all came together. And just like that, when I heard the applause, it was over … but the impact stayed.

Because this experience wasn’t just about being on a big stage. It was about what’s possible when you’re surrounded by an environment that trusts you, supports you, pushes you to grow, and encourages you to embrace those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

Some dreams are professional, some are personal. The rare ones let you honor both. Walking off that stage in front of 21,000 people, I realized something quietly powerful: I can build products, and I can build humans. I don’t have to choose.

This is what it looks like when an organization truly invests in its people. At Cisco, you don’t just do your job. You’re given the chance to stretch, to take ownership, and to be part of moments that feel bigger than you could have even imagined.

And sometimes, those moments start with a message you almost don’t believe, and lead to a stage you’ll never forget.
