Agastya Energy secures ₹4,000-cr loan from IREDA

Agastya Energy Industries Ltd has bagged a loan of around ₹4,000 crore from the public sector financier Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd (IREDA) for its upcoming plant with capacity to manufacture 5 GW of solar cells and 5 GW of modules. The facility is being set up with an investment of ₹7,000 crore in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, the company’s Vice President, Gaurav Tripathi, told businessline recently.

He said the project would be developed in two phases. The company also intends to go in for further backward integration, for the manufacture of ingots and wafers.

Agastya Energy was founded by the promoters of the BSE-listed BN Agrochem, an edible oils producer. In 2023, it roped in solar manufacturing expert Bernhard Rack as CEO. Rack had earlier worked with the Adani group, to set up manufacturing facilities.

Tripathi said Agastya also intends to set up solar plants for electricity generation — around 2 GW a year for the next five years. These plants could be an anchor customer for the cell and module production units, he said.

Wind industry targets 8 GW installations in current year

After a record 6.05 GW of installations in 2025-26, the Indian wind industry expects to do more. According to Girish Tanti, Chairman, Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), and Vice Chairman, Suzlon Energy, the country would see fresh installations of 8 GW wind capacity in the current year. The previous highest was about 5.2 GW in 2016-17, when developers rushed to commission projects before some incentives dried up.

At the Global Wind Day event in Goa recently, Tanti said the industry was confident of adding 10 GW more in the following year.

However, a few others in the industry did not share Tanti’s optimism. They said the 6.05 GW achieved in 2025-26 was largely due to the bunching up of project commissioning; while a similar bunch-up may still happen in the current year, such high levels of installation may not happen in the subsequent years, they said.

Torrent Koppal is the site of India’s largest wind turbine

India’s largest wind turbine, with a nominal capacity of 5.3 MW, was recently erected at the Torrent Koppal site in Karnataka. This is part of an order from Torrent Solar Power for turbines worth 157.3 MW.

The turbine was produced by Venwind Refex, part of the Chennai-based Refex group of companies, with technology from Vensys Energy AG of Germany.

The wind industry stands tall — literally. Turbines are becoming bigger and standing on taller towers. The Venwind Refex turbine features a 130 m tower and 91.2-m-long blades.

India’s biggest wind turbine company, Suzlon Energy, had recently launched its 5 MW machine in India, at the Global Wind Day event in Goa. Chinese company Envision, which has a manufacturing plant in India, sells a 5 MW turbine. Adani Wind, a division of Adani New Industries Ltd, produces 5.2 MW turbines.
