Gracie Abrams is officially dropping her third album, Daughter From Hell, on July 17, and the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter got candid about the writing process during her latest sit-down interview with The New York Times’ Popcast.
During the chat, Gracie dished all about working on her upcoming album—which has already gone triple platinum in my home thanks to her lead single, “Hit the Wall”—with trusted collaborators like Aaron Dessner and Audrey Hobert. But a surprise collab that made the cut on the album? That’d be one with her boyfriend, Paul Mescal.
They co-wrote a track called “Imaginary Friend,” and Gracie kept things real when she was asked whether working with the Hamnet star brought an “uncomfortable level of scrutiny” into their otherwise private relationship.
“I don't like the feeling of hiding,” Gracie told the pod's hosts, Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli. “I also love privacy where it feels like the right thing.”
As for linking with Paul, who’s set to play musician Paul McCartney in the upcoming Beatles biopic dropping next year, Gracie revealed that they constantly explore their creative endeavors together.
“That was so fun to write together. That wasn’t some groundbreaking event for us,” she explained. “We have a very creative home with friends who are so good at what they do, and everyone feels happy to share that with one another.”
The “That’s So True” hitmaker echoed a similar sentiment in her Vogue cover story earlier this month, where she gave fans a rare glimpse into her and Paul’s life at home.
She admitted the actor is “so much better than I’ve ever been” at playing the guitar and revealed that “every room in their home is filled with instruments, including a Bechstein piano” that she sits at every morning.

She also shared that she spent a lot of time on the set of Paul’s Oscar-nominated flick, Hamnet, in London, where they debriefed about the project after each shoot day.
“It feels like every day you come home and read the greatest book ever—that’s what it’s like to be in conversation with someone making something like that,” she gushed.
Love this for both Gracie and Paul, honestly. Can’t wait to slip “Imaginary Friend” into my rotation once it drops!
