After wearing my Apple Watch every single day for close to a decade, I think I’m finally ready to bid her adieu and upgrade to a smart ring. Why am I finally ready to take the leap? Oura just announced the release of its new Oura Ring 5—and it boasts a slew of shiny new features and a better battery life in a significantly slimmer package.

The Oura Ring 5 officially drops on June 4, but you can preorder it right now on Oura’s website and on Amazon so you don’t miss out. This fifth-generation wearable starts at $399, although certain finishes (including gold, rose gold, and ‘stealth’ colorways) can cost up to $499. And while yes, that certainly sounds pricey, our editors agree that it’s 100% worth every penny.

What’s changed

Per the brand, the Oura Ring 5 has been completely redesigned with both aesthetics and health tracking in mind. Not only is the body 40% smaller than its predecessors (down to 6.1 mm, around the same width of a standard men’s wedding band), but the titanium body is more scratch-resistant than past models. Oura says it’s also waterproof up to 100 meters, so you won’t have to stress about wearing it at the beach or pool this summer.

It also has a major battery life boost. Depending on usage levels, your ring can last up to six to nine days on a single charge. (The previous version lasted from five to eight days.) Possibly my favorite feature, though, is that the ring is compatible with Oura’s brand-new portable charging case, which can keep your device juiced up for up to 30 days (!) on a single charge, so you won’t have to worry about bringing an extra cord on your vacation.

What’s stayed the same

Just like its predecessors, the Oura Ring 5 is equipped with sensors along the interior of the band that track temperature, activity levels, and other health metrics (like oxygen levels, heart rate variability, and sleep). This data is then relayed through a series of easy-to-interpret charts on the Oura app, giving you advanced insights about your health, from a nightly sleep score to cycle tracking and even sickness detection. With the Oura Ring 5, these sensors have also gotten an upgrade, allowing for more precise readings.

Don’t worry: the Oura Ring 5 is still compatible with apps like Natural Cycles, Apple Health, Clue, Flo, and more. (Just note that these services may require an additional subscription.)
