SPOILERS AHEAD FOR EUPHORIA SEASON 3, EPISODE 7.
Euphoria has not shied away from giving its characters exactly what they deserve in its three season run, and in the penultimate episode of season 3, Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) got exactly that. It’s true: one of the biggest villains in a show full of incredibly messed up people has been killed off.
Nate spent a good chunk of the season trying to outrun a staggering amount of problems. He hosted one of the worst weddings in cinema history, had a toe cut off, and in tonights episode, was literally buried alive, and then eventually killed by a rattlesnake while in the coffin. It’s an epic end to a truly villainous character, and it served as karmic retribution, series creator Sam Levinson said.
“There's this kind of funny thing where I know what the audience wants in terms of justice or karma and with that in mind, I always think, ‘Well, how can I give it to them?” Levinson told Esquire. “How can I give them what they want, but make it so horrific and anxiety-inducing that by the time it happens, the audience isn't so sure they wanted it?”
Fans of the show have long wanted Nate to face the consequences of his actions, but Levinson wanted the audience to question if something this gruesome is really what the character deserved.

“It’s like, ‘Oh, you wanted him to get his comeuppance…? Okay. sThat feeling of complicity with the audience is always an interesting note to play inside of this sort of larger structure. You end up going, ‘Oh God, I don't know. Should he have had it better? Did he deserve it?’ Those kinds of questions are always exciting to pose to the audience.”
There’s one episode left in the season (and maybe the whole series???), and with something this crazy happening in the final minutes of episode 7, there’s no telling what’s in store for us next week. Good luck to us all.
