This spring, as a glamorous hors d'oeuvre while we wait for The Devil Wears Prada 2, Anne Hathaway stars in David Lowery’s noir-ish Mother Mary as a dazzling pop star. If you’ve been waiting for Hathaway to sing again since Les Miserables, you’re in luck. Here’s what you need to know to watch Mother Mary now or stream it again and again.
The film is a psychological thriller/drama/romance (??) that follows the relationship between Mary and her former fashion designer Sam Anselm, played by Michaela Coel. She needs her to stage a comeback tour, and goes all the way to Sam’s gothic home in order to make this collaboration happen in time. What happens next? We shall see…
The film is in limited theaters on Friday, April 17 and then in wide release on April 24. That means that, for the first week, the film is mostly just out in New York City and Los Angeles… and, even in those cities, just a few showtimes/theaters.
For the music alone, this is worth checking out in theaters. The Mother Mary: Greatest Hits soundtrack features original songs from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs (who also stars in the film as a character called Imogen) as well as an original score from composer Daniel Hart. Thankfully, both albums are already on Spotify etc.
As of this moment, A24 does not have a streaming service. But most of their films wind up on HBO Max. One of the most recent releases on the platform now, for example, is the A24 film If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
Let’s use If I Had Legs I’d Kick You for example again. That film was released in theaters back in October of 2025. Four months later, it’s on HBO Max. That means that we should be able to expect Mother Mary on streaming in August.
Before that, of course, it will be available to rent on PVOD. But that that can pricey! If you can’t see the movie in theaters and don’t mind waiting a little longer, I say wait.
I cannot recommend Lowery’s The Green Knight enough. The spooky fantasy tale based on a lesser-known part of King Arthur lore stars Dev Patel as Sir Gawain, as well as Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, and Sarita Choudhury. Barry Keoghan also pops up. It’s a wonderfully weird dream of a movie. If you want to see another psychosexual drama about fashion and haven’t seen Phantom Thread, get involved with that ASAP.
As for the members of the Mother Mary cast, I have some underrated recommendations. For Hathaway, watch Rachel Getting Married. If you’ve already seen Coel’s I May Destroy You, watch Been So Long. (Or… if you want to see Jonathan Bailey in a truly bonkers role, watch Coel’s sitcom Chewing Gum.) And finally, of course, watch Hunter Schafer in Kinds of Kindness and/or the final season of Euphoria.
