Mary Bennet in The Other Bennet Sister has an uphill battle in her quest to find love in a hopeless place—aka, the Bennet family. Not only does she have four sisters to compete with, but her mother misses no opportunity to put her down. Her mother isn’t the only nemesis she faces, though, and she runs into quite a few characters who try to dull her inevitable glow up. So, who is the show’s biggest villain? We asked the cast.
Ella Bruccoleri (Mary Bennet), Dónal Finn (Tom Hayward) and Laurie Davidson (William Ryder) sat down with Cosmopolitan to answer that question. Dónal floats tentatively, “It could be Mrs. Bennet. Caroline Bingley, but then she’s misunderstood as well.” Ella explains, “I don’t think Sarah Quintrell, the writer of the show, writes true villains, they might seem villainous at first. Maybe Mrs. Hurst,” she adds, referring to Caroline Bingley’s older sister. Dónal throws out a new contender, “The guide on the mountain. He knew the conditions and the weather that day.” He is referring to a pivotal scene with Mary, Tom, Ryder, and Caroline when they climb a mountain and the weather has other plans for them.
“I think it’s hard not to hate Mrs. Bennet and Caroline Bingley at times,” Ella says. Laurie comes in hot with an unexpected villain, “Ms. Baxter,” before quickly backtracking, “I didn’t want to say someone who had already been mentioned so I just pulled her out, I don’t know why I was dragging Ms. Baxter into this. She doesn’t deserve to be thrown into the mix.” The cast quickly agrees that there are no true villains, just a lot of misunderstood people. But how about the mountain guide? Ella and Dónal quickly agree he might be the true villain, but then Laurie says, “He’s the sole bread winner in his family. We don’t know what his home situation is.”
You’ll have the watch the rest of the season to find out who the real villain is. It might be a race between Mrs. Bennet and Caroline Bingley to villain village. But don’t forget, they’re just misunderstood.
The Other Bennet Sister will release weekly every Wednesday and will conclude its 10-episode run in mid-June.
