King Charles has been monarch for a minute, but he’s yet to move into Buckingham Palace—and apparently he has zero plans to reside there. In fact, the royals are completely done with Buckingham Palace and will never live there again—despite a recent and very costly renovation.

James Chalmers, the Keeper of the Privy Purse, confirmed the news, saying in part, “I can update you that after careful consideration, and to greatly increase opportunities for public access, The King and Queen have decided not to adopt Buckingham Palace as a personal residence and will instead continue to use Clarence House as their London home. Their Majesties will, however, have access to private rooms within the Palace where they can retire during the course of a working day, and which could be utilised as potential residential accommodation in times ahead.”

Chalmers added, “His Majesty retains huge affection for Buckingham Palace and a deep respect of its role in royal and public life. It will remain a working home but we are seeking to widen public access precisely to maximize the national benefit of a publicly-funded building.”

So, what about Prince William, you ask? He intends to remain at his new home, Forest Lodge in Windsor, once he becomes king.

Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace will still be absolutely central to the monarchy, with state visits, meetings, receptions, and various events taking place there.
