While sayings like “any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen” and “the best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear” are absolutely true, I exclusively stick to mineral-based sunscreen on my face. It’s a personal preference, of course, but I’ve found that my sensitive, acne-prone skin simply does better with mineral formulas. I also notice they’re more effective at keeping the melasma on my cheeks and jawline under control.

That said, loving mineral sunscreen and loving how it looks on skin are often two very different things. Zinc oxide is notoriously difficult to formulate with—it’s naturally thick and white, which is why so many mineral sunscreens leave behind a chalky cast or feel heavy on the skin. But a new generation of formulas is finally changing that.

As I mentioned above, the big thing here is the lack of white cast. The formula uses 15 percent zinc oxide to protect from UVA and UVB rays, but it feels the opposite of most zinc-based sunscreens. With a normal amount of blending, it sets to an invisible (and slightly glowy) finish on all skin tones. I’ve asked friends with fair and deep skin tones to try the formula on their own skin, and they all said the same thing: It wears more like a lightweight face moisturizer than a sunscreen. And it doesn’t rely on any tint to negate the white, chalky effect. SkinCeuticals’ mineral technology is good enough without it.

Ingredient-wise, the formula is super impressive, too. It’s got barrier-repairing actives that help lock in moisture for long-lasting hydration plus niacinamide to improve skin tone and texture and minimize inflammation.

My review:

I tested this sunscreen in three ways: as an everyday SPF under makeup, as a beach-day sunscreen, and during outdoor workouts—and it impressed me in every scenario. The lightweight, nongreasy formula layers seamlessly under foundation and concealer without any pilling or patchiness. I also slathered it all over my face and chest during a weeklong trip to Grand Cayman, where the UV index hit 10 most days, and I didn’t get sunburned once—nor did my melasma flare up. Even on long outdoor runs, it kept my skin protected without burning or stinging my eyes as I sweated.

While the formula is incredibly gentle, it’s worth noting that it’s not water- or sweat-resistant, so you’ll need to be diligent about reapplying frequently if you’re relying on it as your primary SPF at the beach or pool.

I also love that Future Mineral is loaded with anti-aging ingredients to help correct fine lines, dark spots, and uneven-looking skin. As a 34-year-old who didn’t wear sunscreen for way too many years, I can use all the help I can get in the skin-smoothing and brightening departments these days. And speaking of ingredients, it is noncomedogenic and came up without any red flags on Acne Clinic’s to Sofie Pavitt’s pore-clogger checkers (I run all of my products through these to assess how likely they are to break me out).

The only downside to Future Mineral is the price—$60 for 1 oz. of sunscreen is obviously a lot, but for a product that feels light-years better than other comparable formulas, it’s worth it. As far as mineral sunscreens go, this is the best of the best. A good sunscreen is one of the best investments you can make for your skin, and this one is the best of the best.
