I Started Using a Brightening Serum Early—Here’s Why My Skin Stays More Even Now
Celia Shatzman · 2026-06-18 · via Latest Content - Cosmopolitan

Seeing dark spots or patches? You’ll want to add a brightening serum to your skincare routine ASAP. That’s exactly what I did once I realized I was prone to hyperpigmentation—and they’ve been a mainstay in my regimen ever since. But if you want to stay ahead of the issue, it’s worth starting before discoloration even appears.

“Certain brightening ingredients can be beneficial even before dark spots develop,” explains dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD. “Ingredients such as vitamin C and niacinamide not only help improve existing discoloration but can also help protect against factors that contribute to future pigmentation changes. It’s why so many people choose to incorporate antioxidant products like vitamin C into their routines in their twenties or thirties as part of a preventative approach to skincare.”

A sneak peek at our favorite brightening serums:

  • Even Intensive Skin Tone Correcting Serum

  • Molecular Hero Dark Spot Serum

  • Dark Spot Milky Serum

So to help you prevent dark spots—or clear up existing hyperpigmentation—I pulled together the top editor and expert brightening serum recs. Whether you’re dealing with dark spots from old breakouts or more widespread melasma from hormones or excess sun exposure, there’s an option for you on this list.

Even Intensive Skin Tone Correcting Serum

Pros

  • Often recommended by dermatologists
  • Gently resurfaces while it brightens
  • Lotion-like texture layers nicely with other products.

Cons

  • Takes at least 8 weeks of daily use to see a visible reduction of dark results
  • Contains exfoliating ingredients, which could be irritating for super sensitive skin

Size50 mL / 1.7 fl oz

Why we love it: Who doesn’t love a twofer? This serum has a two-pronged approach to tackle dark spots and discoloration: b.r.y.t.e.r. biotechnology, which spotlights brightening ingredients and AHAs to resurface skin, and patented TAP biotechnology that combats internal free radicals to prevent uneven skin tone and dark patches caused by oxidative stress. The brand says you can expect brighter, more even skin after eight weeks of use—and our editor testers agree.

Cosmo editor review: “I deal with both melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from old breakouts (lucky me!) and this brightening serum is the most effective I’ve tried for fading both. It’s powerful but non-sensitizing, and I love that it has AHAs to gently smooth my skin too.” —LAUREN BALSAMO, BEAUTY DIRECTOR

Cosmo editor review: “Hyperpigmentation has been a major issue for me forever, including a stubborn spot that wouldn’t budge for years. This serum was the first to successfully fade it—I wish I had taken before and after pictures because the results were pretty dramatic for a serum that is still gentle on my sensitive skin. Why we love it: I’ve been haunted by the scars of past pimples and they are scary. There’s nothing more frustrating than when the post-acne marks actually last (way) longer than the zit. Luckily, this little guy is designed to brighten those areas, along with dark spots and hyperpigmentation, courtesy of tranexamic acid, alpha-arbutin, and niacinamide. The milky serum is gentle enough for daily use without irritating the skin, though patience is key, as it takes at least four to six weeks to see results.

Cosmo editor review: “It's commonplace for a brightening serum to be drying. It's filled with a whole bunch of actives, you know? But this milky version from Banu feels like a hybrid formula that also moisturizes my skin. I use it in the morning and love the texture so much, specifically for how easily it absorbs into my skin but leaves me with a glow. I always top with moisturizer, but I don't even really have to on my combo skin."” —BETH GILLETTE, BEAUTY EDITOR

FAQ

What is the best brightening face serum?

“The best brightening serum depends on your skin type and specific concerns,” Dr. Garshick says. “In general, I look for serums that contain proven brightening ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, tranexamic acid, alpha arbutin, azelaic acid, or thiamidol. Vitamin C remains one of my favorite ingredients because it not only helps brighten the skin and improve the appearance of dark spots, but also provides antioxidant protection against environmental damage that can contribute to uneven skin tone.”

When should I use a brightening serum?

“A brightening serum can be used as part of both a morning and evening skincare routine, depending on the ingredients and the formulation,” Dr. Garshick says. “In general, I recommend applying a brightening serum after cleansing and before moisturizer. Vitamin C is often best used in the morning because it provides antioxidant protection throughout the day, while ingredients such as azelaic acid can be used in the evening or even twice daily if tolerated. Consistency is key, as it often takes several weeks or even months to see meaningful improvement in discoloration.”

How to choose a brightening serum:

“When choosing a brightening serum, it is important to first identify your primary concern,” Dr. Garshick says. “Some people are looking to address sun spots, while others are concerned about melasma, post-acne marks, or overall dullness. It is also important to consider your skin type and sensitivity level. Those with sensitive skin may do better with ingredients such as niacinamide or azelaic acid, while individuals with more significant hyperpigmentation may benefit from formulas that combine multiple brightening ingredients, including retinoids and exfoliating acids. I also recommend choosing products from reputable brands that are known for using stable, well-formulated ingredients.”
