35 Flirty Emojis to Level Up Your Texting Game
2026-04-29 · via Latest Content - Cosmopolitan

Flirting over text is already a little chaotic, and somehow emojis only make it more confusing. One minute they’re helping you soften a message or make something feel playful, and the next you’re overanalyzing whether that one smiley face meant something…or nothing at all. That’s where flirty emojis come in.

Used well, flirty emojis can do a lot of the work for you—especially when you’re figuring out how to flirt over text. They add tone, hint at intention, and can make a message feel more playful or more suggestive without you having to spell it out. The difference between “hey” and “hey ☺️” isn’t huge—but it’s also not nothing. The right emoji can turn a basic text into something that feels intentional, while the wrong one can completely throw off the vibe.

And with thousands of emojis to choose from, there’s no shortage of options. The trick is knowing which ones actually read as flirty, which ones feel like too much, and which ones are just…not doing what you think they’re doing. (Looking at you, upside-down smiley face.) It also depends on who you’re talking to and what your relationship dynamic already looks like—because what lands as playful with one person might come off as confusing (or even a little cringe) with someone else.

As sex educator Carly S. puts it, “Flirting isn’t one size fits all. What one person finds cute, another might find completely cringe.” In other words, context matters just as much as the emoji itself.

So yeah—if you’ve ever stared at your keyboard debating between 😏 and 🙂 for way too long, this is for you.

5 Tips for Flirting With Emojis, According to Experts

1. Be Yourself

It sounds obvious, but it matters. Even if your texting style feels a little different from how you are in person, you still want it to feel like you. If something reads inauthentic or slightly try-hard, it’s probably not the move—and that applies to emojis too. If the idea of sending a winky face makes you cringe, skip it. There are plenty of flirty emojis that might feel more natural to you.

2. Know Your Audience

Before you start flirting with emojis, get a sense of the other person’s vibe. That means paying attention to how they text, what they respond to, and how playful (or not) they tend to be. If you’re thinking about using something more suggestive, it’s also worth considering what they’re actually comfortable with.

“Generally, you do want to cater to your audience with what emojis you choose to use. This means being aware of emojis that represent body parts and how you or your partner may or may not identify with them,” says Lee Hatcher, a therapist at the Gender & Sexuality Therapy Center in New York.

It also comes down to reading the room—yes, even over text. “Find out more information about the person you're flirting with so you can learn about their likes and tailor what you're saying to them specifically,” adds Carly.

And while you don’t need a formal conversation before sending a slightly flirty emoji, if you’re unsure how something will land, it’s always better to check in. The goal is to keep things fun—not make someone uncomfortable.

3. Don’t Come on Too Strong

When it comes to emoji flirting, less really is more. Starting off too intense can kill the vibe before it even gets going, so it’s usually better to ease into things and see how the other person responds.

“What you don’t want is to come on too strong with them,” Hatcher says. “Less means more and leaves more room for the imagination.”

“One of the worst things we can do at the beginning of a relationship is to come on too strong when a green light hasn’t been given,” notes sex therapist Holly Richmond, PhD. “There’s nothing better than sexy or flirty banter, but to do it well takes a degree of attunement.”

Flirting works best when there’s a little build-up. As Richmond puts it, “The essence of flirting is imagination and tension building. Flirting is meant to inspire the other person, to make them feel wanted and highly desired.”

4. Riff Off Your Texting Partner

If the conversation feels like a one-way street, that’s kind of your answer. But if it’s flowing, lean into it—use their texts and emojis as a guide for yours.

“Be playful and creative, match the tone of the conversation, and use emojis to express affection and humor,” says sex therapist Denise Renye, PhD. Think of it like a back-and-forth. You’re not just throwing things out there—you’re picking up on what they’re saying and building on it in a way that shows you’re paying attention.

5. Have Fun

At the end of the day, remember: it’s just flirting. It might feel high-stakes, especially early on, but it doesn’t have to be that serious. If it lands, great. If it doesn’t, you move on.

The point is to enjoy it—so don’t overthink every emoji you send. But if you’re still spiraling, keep reading. We've got you.

Behold: The 35 Flirtiest Emojis

1. The iconic wink 😉

You can’t really go wrong with a classic wink. It’s one of the easiest ways to signal that you’re flirting without having to say it outright.

It also does a lot of heavy lifting. A simple “what are you doing?” or “can’t wait to see you” can read completely differently once you add 😉—suddenly it’s not just a text, it’s a flirty text.

2. Heart eyes 😍

Okay, heart eyes can feel a little over-the-top—but that’s kind of the point. No one’s really using it with full sincerity, which is what makes it work. It reads a little tongue-in-cheek, like you’re saying “you’re hot” or “I’m into you” without actually having to say it.

3. Ghost 👻

The ghost might not seem like an obvious flirty emoji, but it works. It’s playful, a little chaotic, and feels like a slightly more unserious version of the wink. Used right, it adds just enough personality to a text without feeling too try-hard.

4. Fluttery hearts smiley 🥰

This one leans more sweet than flirty, but it still works—especially if you’re trying to signal that you’re genuinely into someone. It’s softer than something like 😏, so it’s a good option when you want to keep things cute without overdoing it.

5. The side eyes 👀

The eyes emoji is subtle, but it works. It can signal interest, curiosity, or just a little “I see you” energy—without being too obvious about it. It’s especially good for reacting to something flirty, like a selfie or a message you don’t want to overcommit to but still want to acknowledge.

6. The purple devil 😈

If you want to make it very clear you’re flirting, this one does the job. It adds that slightly mischievous, I’m not being innocent here energy—even if the text itself is pretty normal. It’s also one of those emojis that instantly changes the tone. Add it to something basic, and suddenly it reads way more suggestive than you probably intended (or…exactly as intended).

7. The blushy kissy face 😚

This one feels like a lower-stakes version of the classic kissy face (😘). It’s still flirty, just a little more casual. Think of it as a soft launch—you’re flirting, but not going all in yet. It’s a good option when you want to test the waters without making it feel too intense.

8. The pleading face 🥺

Playing a little innocent can be surprisingly effective when you’re flirting, and this emoji does that for you. It adds a softer, slightly vulnerable tone that can make even a basic message feel more intentional. It also works with almost anything. Add 🥺 and suddenly the text feels cuter, a little more disarming, and harder to ignore.

9. The smirk 😏

The smirk is a little more subtle than 😈, but it still gets the message across. It leans confident, slightly teasing, and works well when there’s a bit of back-and-forth or playful tension. It’s especially good for dares, jokes, or anything that feels a little competitive—just know it tends to push the conversation in a more flirty direction.

10. These stars ✨

This one doesn’t have a super specific meaning, which is exactly why it works. It adds a little sparkle, like you’re saying something slightly more intentional than you actually are. It’s subtle, a little mysterious, and can make even a basic text feel more interesting without trying too hard.

11. The wink and tongue combo 😜

This is basically the louder version of the wink. It’s more playful, a little chaotic, and definitely more obvious. If 😉 feels subtle, 😜 is you leaning into it. It adds a fun, slightly unhinged energy that works when the conversation is already flirty and you want to push it a bit further.

12. This other tongue guy 😛

This one has big Golden Retriever energy—no agenda, just happy to be here. It’s playful and a little goofy, which makes it feel less intense than 😜. Use this when you want something flirty but lighter—more cute than chaotic.

13. The subtle hug 🤗

This one leans more chill, which is exactly why it works. It can read totally friendly—or just flirty enough, depending on the context. That slight ambiguity is part of the appeal. Used in the right moment, it adds a softer, more low-key kind of flirting.

14. This sun ☀️

Not an obvious flirty emoji, but it works (especially in early-stage texting). It’s perfect for good morning messages when you want to add something without overdoing it. A simple “good morning ☀️” reads a little warmer, a little more intentional, without feeling like too much.

15. Your moon of choice (🌛, 🌜, 🌕, etc)

Same idea as the sun, just for night. A simple “goodnight 🌙” adds a little something without making it a whole thing. It’s low-effort, slightly flirty, and works especially well when you’re in that early texting stage.

16. The peach 🍑

This one’s a little more on the nose, but still playful if used right. It’s an easy way to reference bodies or flirt a little more directly without spelling everything out. That said, it definitely depends on timing. It works best when the conversation is already headed in that direction—not as an opening move.

17. The eggplant 🍆

This one is pretty direct. It’s usually a sign that the conversation is moving into more explicitly flirty territory. Like 🍑, it works best when there’s already that kind of vibe... otherwise it can come off a little (or a lot) abrupt.

18. The sassy girl 💁‍♀️

This one is all about attitude. It adds a slightly playful, bratty energy to whatever you’re saying. It’s great when you want to be flirty but also a little teasing, like you’re not taking things too seriously.

19. The love letter 💌

This one is underrated, but it works. It’s a little unexpected, which makes it stand out without trying too hard. It reads cute, slightly romantic, and just different enough to catch someone’s attention.

20. The lipstick kiss 💋

This one feels a little more elevated than your standard kiss emoji. It’s flirty, slightly dramatic, and has that “I’m not trying too hard, but I know exactly what I’m doing” energy. It’s less about the kiss itself and more about the vibe—suggestive without being too obvious.

21. The heart with an arrow 💘

This one reads a little more romantic than flirty, but in a way that still works. It’s basically a softer, more playful way to say “I’m into you” without making it a whole thing. Because it’s not used as often, it feels a little more intentional (and a little less over-the-top than you’d expect. Promise).

22. The not-so-innocent angel 😇

This one is very “what, me?” It reads sweet on the surface, but there’s a little wink to it—like you know exactly what you’re doing. It’s a good way to play innocent while still keeping things flirty.

23. The double hearts 💕

Of all the heart emojis, this one is probably the safest. It reads flirty but still low-stakes. Think of it as a starter heart. It gets the message across without feeling overly intense, which makes it a good option when you’re still figuring out the vibe.

24. The zodiac emoji (♓️, ♈️, ♏️, etc.)

Sending your sign (or theirs) is a little flirty, a little unhinged, and very specific. It can read as “I’m curious about you” or “I’ve already checked our astrological compatibility,” depending on the context. Either way, it adds a slightly chaotic, personal touch that stands out.

25. The hot face 🥵

This one is pretty straightforward. It’s an easy way to say “you’re hot” without actually saying it. It works especially well as a reaction—like to a selfie or a flirty text—when you want to hype someone up without overexplaining it.

26. The shower 🚿

This one is a little unexpected, but it works. It’s a low-key way to react to something flirty without escalating too fast. “My favorite unknown flirty emoji is the shower emoji,” Hatcher says. “It’s the perfect way to indicate that things are getting spicy enough that you need to cool off or that things have reached dirtier territory.”

Used as a response, it adds just enough implication without spelling anything out.

27. The upside-down smiley 🙃

This one has a little “who, me?” energy. It’s great for softening a message or signaling that you’re being a little playful. It also works well when you want to add a flirty spin without saying it outright. Something like “I don’t have plans Friday 🙃” suddenly reads less neutral and a little more intentional.

28. The droplets 💦

This one is definitely more suggestive, so timing matters. It usually signals that the conversation has already moved past casual flirting. Used at the right moment, it adds a more obvious, playful edge. Note: It’s not exactly subtle, so save it for when you know it’ll land.

29. The exploding head 🤯

This one works well as a reaction when something feels a little extra, whether that’s a flirty text or a very good photo. It reads like, “okay, wow,” without having to say much, and keeps things playful without going too far.

30. The cat heart eyes 😻

This is a cuter, slightly more playful version of 😍. It has the same “I’m into you” energy, just with a little more personality. It’s a good option when you want to keep things flirty without taking yourself too seriously.

31. The skull 💀

This one is pure “I’m dead.” It’s usually used for something funny, but it can also hit in a flirty context when someone sends something unexpectedly good. It’s low-effort, a little dry, and works best as a reaction rather than a statement.

32. The dizzy face 😵

This one feels a little more chaotic. It’s less “I’m dead” and more “okay, that just took me out.” Use it when you want to lean into the moment without fully committing to a flirty response. It keeps things playful, but slightly unhinged.

33. The lip bite 👄

This one feels a little more intentional than a standard kiss emoji. It’s flirty, slightly suggestive, and adds just enough attitude to make it interesting. It works when you want to turn up the energy a bit without saying anything too direct.

34. The rose 🌹

This one leans more romantic than flirty, but it still works. It has a slightly elevated, intentional feel—like a small gesture without making it a whole thing. It’s a good way to add a hint of romance without overdoing it.

35. The mermaid 🧜‍♀️

This one is a little random, which is exactly why it works. It adds a slightly dreamy, playful vibe that feels more personality-driven than obviously flirty. Use it when you want to keep things light and a little unexpected.
