Her Heart

She will always
be my last—

last dog,
last thought.

Blind and deaf,
I held her
when the stroke came,

felt her heart
against the pulse
inside my arms.

She left
her shadow
in my heart.

Her name
was Molly.

Written for dVerse Poets, Quadrille of 44-words about a dog. Some images created with Midjourney; all writing is authentically my own original work.©Misky 2006-2026.

Losing our fur-buddies is so difficult … Chloe the English Spaniel was ours. Your quadrille is sad, it is also beautifully composed.

She has been gone for well over 10 years now, and I have nothing but happy memories of her.

Your quadrille touched me, Marilyn. Our Jasper did the same to me – left a shadow on my heart.

    From separate to companions
    From distant to entangled
    From being to not
    And yet… and yet
    Still remembered
    Still loved
    Still here.

She was, truly, the sweetest dog — and I’ve had several over my lifetime. I swear that sometimes I hear her running across the wood floor in kitchen.

It was very difficult at the time, but I remember her fondly now. That photo actually makes me laugh; she used to drag all of her bedding outside on to the lawn on a sunny day, and there she’d stay (if allowed).

She died a good few years ago now, and I’m blessed with some of the happiest memories ever of her. That is the return on the price, Clark.

    Oh, Misky. Sweet Molly.
As my own soul-dog Kiera Kai just turned 15 this year, this brings true tears. They really do own pieces of our soul, don’t they?

True. And it always does — unless the animal survives you, in which case if nobody is willing to care for it …. which is why she will be my last.
