Knicks, Thunder take control in conference finals
Matt Lewakow · 2026-05-27 · via The Oakland Post

The 2026 NBA Conference Finals have already delivered drama, breakout performances and the feeling that the league’s next generation has officially arrived. With the New York Knicks holding a commanding lead in the East and the Oklahoma City Thunder grabbing momentum in the West, the race to the NBA Finals is beginning to take shape.

In the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks have looked dominant against the Cleveland Cavaliers through the first two games. New York opened the series with a thrilling overtime comeback victory before controlling Game 2 from start to finish.

Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns have led a balanced attack, while the Knicks’ defense has consistently frustrated Cleveland’s backcourt. The Cavaliers entered the series with momentum after knocking out Detroit, but they now face enormous pressure heading into Game 3 at home.

The Knicks’ nine-game playoff winning streak has turned them into the hottest team remaining in the postseason. Their physical style, rebounding advantage and late-game execution have made them look like legitimate championship contenders.

Cleveland still has the talent to make the series competitive, especially with Donovan Mitchell capable of taking over games, but falling behind 3-0 would likely end any realistic comeback hopes.

Out West, the Thunder and San Antonio Spurs have produced one of the most entertaining playoff series in recent memory. San Antonio stunned Oklahoma City in a double-overtime Game 1 thriller, but the defending champion Thunder responded with back-to-back wins to take a 2-1 series lead.

Game 3 showcased Oklahoma City’s depth and resilience. After falling behind early on the road, the Thunder’s bench completely shifted the game, helping OKC pull away in the second half.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to prove why he won another MVP award, while the young core around him has stepped up throughout the postseason. On the other side, Victor Wembanyama has still been spectacular for San Antonio, giving fans a glimpse of what could become the NBA’s next great rivalry for years to come.

The Thunder vs. Spurs matchup has also become a major television success. Game 1 reportedly drew record-breaking viewership numbers for a Western Conference Finals opener, showing how much excitement surrounds the league’s emerging stars.

Around the basketball world, many are already comparing this rivalry to some of the NBA’s iconic postseason battles of past eras.

So far, the conference finals have been defined by youth, athleticism and star power. Whether it is Brunson leading the Knicks back toward their first Finals appearance since 1999 or Gilgeous-Alexander trying to guide Oklahoma City to back-to-back championships, the NBA’s future is clearly on display.

With both series still unfolding, the next few games could determine whether the Knicks and Thunder continue their march toward the Finals or if the Cavaliers and Spurs can shift the momentum back in their favor.
