Hurricanes end 20-year drought, capture stanley cup in six games
Matt Lewakowski · 2026-06-18 · via The Oakland Post

The 2026 Stanley Cup Final delivered another memorable chapter in NHL history as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in six games to capture their second Stanley Cup championship and first since 2006.

Carolina completed the series with a dominant 3-0 victory in Game 6, capping off one of the most impressive playoff runs of the salary cap era.

For the Hurricanes, the championship represented the culmination of years of playoff appearances and near misses under head coach Rod Brind’Amour. Since taking over behind the bench in 2018, Brind’Amour transformed Carolina into one of the NHL’s most consistent contenders.

This season, the team finally broke through, finishing the postseason with a remarkable 16-3 record and showcasing a balanced lineup that excelled on both ends of the ice.

Game 6 showcased everything that made Carolina successful throughout the playoffs. Veteran forward Taylor Hall opened the scoring early in the contest, giving the Hurricanes momentum. Jackson Blake and Nikolaj Ehlers later added goals, while rookie goaltender Brandon Bussi stopped all 22 shots he faced to record the first playoff shutout of his career.

Carolina’s disciplined defensive effort prevented Vegas from generating sustained offensive pressure and secured the franchise’s long-awaited championship.

One of the biggest storylines of the series was the performance of Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal. The 37-year-old veteran scored in five of the six Stanley Cup Final games and emerged as the emotional leader of Carolina’s championship run.

His outstanding postseason play earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy as the NHL’s playoff Most Valuable Player, making him the oldest player ever to receive the award.

The victory was especially meaningful for Brind’Amour, who captained Carolina to its first Stanley Cup championship in 2006. Twenty years later, he guided the Hurricanes to another title as head coach, becoming just the fourth person in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup with the same franchise as both a player and coach.

His journey symbolizes the culture of accountability and hard work that has defined Carolina’s resurgence over the past decade.

Despite the loss, the Vegas Golden Knights enjoyed another impressive season. Vegas battled through a challenging Western Conference playoff bracket and reached the Stanley Cup Final for the second time in franchise history. Stars such as Jack Eichel and Mark Stone generated opportunities throughout the series, but Carolina’s defensive structure and goaltending proved too difficult to overcome.

For Carolina fans, the championship marks the end of a 20-year wait and the beginning of a new era of success. The Hurricanes have established themselves as one of the NHL’s model organizations, combining strong leadership, player development and a commitment to team-first hockey.

As Jordan Staal lifted the Stanley Cup above his head and celebrated with teammates, it was a moment that connected the franchise’s past championship in 2006 with a new generation of Hurricanes players and fans.

The 2026 Stanley Cup Final will be remembered as the year Carolina returned to the top of the hockey world, proving that patience, perseverance, and strong leadership can ultimately lead to championship glory.
