A new era of New York: Knicks win NBA championship
Matt Lewakowski · 2026-06-18 · via The Oakland Post

The 2026 NBA Finals delivered drama, comebacks, and the crowning of a new champion as the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in five games to capture their first NBA championship since 1973.

The Knicks secured the title with a 94-90 victory in Game 5 on June 13, winning the series 4-1 and bringing the Larry O’Brien Trophy back to New York for the first time in 53 years.

The Finals showcased a clash between experience and youth. New York was led by superstar guard Jalen Brunson, while San Antonio relied on the rising talent of Victor Wembanyama and a young core that exceeded expectations throughout the postseason. Despite the Spurs’ energetic play, the Knicks consistently found ways to win close games.

The series began with New York taking control early. The Knicks won Game 1 by a score of 105-95 before surviving a nail-biting Game 2 victory, 105-104, to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

San Antonio responded in Game 3 with a 115-111 win, giving its home crowd hope that the series could shift in the Spurs’ favor. However, Game 4 proved to be the turning point. New York rallied from a massive deficit to earn a dramatic 107-106 victory and move within one win of the championship.

Game 5 encapsulated the Knicks’ postseason run. Trailing by as many as 16 points, New York once again mounted a comeback behind Brunson’s remarkable performance. The star guard scored 45 points, including 13 consecutive points in the fourth quarter, helping the Knicks erase the deficit and close out the series on the road. Brunson’s heroics earned him NBA Finals MVP honors and cemented his place in franchise history.

One of the defining themes of the Finals was New York’s resilience. The Knicks rallied from double-digit deficits in all four of their victories, repeatedly demonstrating poise under pressure. Their depth, defense, and clutch shot-making allowed them to overcome the talented Spurs, who were making their first Finals appearance since 2014.

Although the Spurs fell short of a championship, the future remains bright in San Antonio. Wembanyama and the team’s young roster gained valuable experience on basketball’s biggest stage and are expected to remain contenders for years to come.

For New York, the championship marks the culmination of years of rebuilding and perseverance. The victory ends one of the longest title droughts in NBA history and delivers a championship to one of the league’s most passionate fan bases.

Led by Brunson and a balanced roster, the Knicks completed one of the most memorable playoff runs in franchise history and etched their names into NBA history.
