Eight teams remain in the race for the Stanley Cup
Matt Lewakow · 2026-05-06 · via The Oakland Post

The 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs have officially entered the second round, where the field has narrowed to eight teams and the path to hockey’s ultimate prize has become significantly more demanding. With contenders emerging and underdogs still alive, this round is shaping up to define who truly has championship potential.

The bracket now features four high-stakes matchups split across the Eastern and Western Conferences. In the east, the Carolina Hurricanes face the Philadelphia Flyers, while another series pits the Buffalo Sabres or Boston Bruins winner against either the Tampa Bay Lightning or Montreal Canadiens. In the west, the Colorado Avalanche meet the Minnesota Wild, while the Pacific side features the Vegas Golden Knights against the Anaheim Ducks.

Carolina enters the round as one of the most complete teams in the postseason. Their disciplined defensive system and relentless forecheck have made them a consistent contender, and they are widely viewed as favorites in this matchup.

Philadelphia, however, arrives with momentum after a hard fought first-round series. The Flyers have leaned heavily on goaltending and opportunistic scoring, including a decisive overtime victory to close out their opening round.

This series will likely come down to whether Carolina’s structure can neutralize Philadelphia’s ability to capitalize on limited chances.

The second Eastern Conference series remains fluid depending on first-round outcomes, but it will feature a clash between Atlantic Division powerhouses.

The Sabres, returning to playoff prominence, have shown explosive offensive potential and depth scoring, while veteran teams like Tampa Bay or Boston bring playoff-tested experience and physicality. This matchup could become one of the most balanced of the round, where special teams and goaltending determine the outcome.

In the Western Conference, the series between Colorado and Minnesota may be the most anticipated of the round.

The Avalanche, who advanced dominantly, bring elite offensive talent and depth throughout the lineup. Meanwhile, the Wild counter with a physical style and top-end talent capable of matching Colorado shift-for-shift. Historically, this matchup has been competitive, adding another layer of intrigue.

Many view this series as a de facto conference final, with the winner emerging as a favorite to represent the west in the Stanley Cup Final.

The Pacific Division matchup features a classic contrast. Vegas enters as a seasoned contender with depth, structure and playoff experience, while Anaheim has emerged as one of the postseason’s biggest surprises.

The Ducks’ offensive flashes and resilience helped them reach this stage, but they now face a deeper, more balanced Vegas roster. The key question will be whether Anaheim’s momentum can overcome Vegas’ consistency.

The second round is where contenders solidify their identity. With the Stanley Cup final looming and the competition intensifying, every shift, save and special teams opportunity carries added weight.
