While the update features a new Xbox Mode, the primary focus for most users is a significantly faster and more stable File Explorer experience.
The update expands native file handling capabilities, allowing users to open and extract formats such as .nupkg, .xar, .uu, and .cpio directly within the system. By integrating these backup and package tools into the Windows 11 core, Microsoft reduces the necessity for third-party extraction software.
Under the hood, the update incorporates elements from Project K2, an internal optimization initiative. These “bits” are designed to streamline the Windows 11 kernel, preparing the architecture for future AI-driven features while improving the general reliability of the explorer.exe process to prevent crashes.

Fix: Windows 11 now ensures the Downloads folder maintains its “Extra Large Icons” setting when accessed via browsers, correcting a bug that previously forced a reset to “List” view.
