More than a decade after the original Google Glass failed to achieve mainstream appeal, Google is pivoting its strategy toward the luxury fashion sector. In a bid to redefine smart eyewear as a desirable consumer accessory, Google has entered a strategic partnership with the Italian luxury house Gucci, owned by the Kering Group. The collaboration aims to develop high-end smart glasses integrated with artificial intelligence, currently scheduled for a 2027 release.
The primary objective of this partnership is to overcome the aesthetic hurdles that hampered previous iterations of wearable technology. By leveraging Gucci’s design expertise, Google intends to create a device that prioritizes style, ensuring the hardware is discreet enough for daily use. This move is a direct response to the success of Meta’s Ray-Ban collection, which demonstrated that consumers are more likely to adopt wearable tech when it is branded by established fashion icons.
Beyond Gucci, Google has secured additional collaborations with eyewear brands such as Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. These alliances allow Google to market its technology under established lifestyle labels, potentially mitigating consumer resistance toward “tech-heavy” facial wearables.

Before the Gucci model debuts, Google is expected to launch “Project Aura,” its first augmented reality (AR) glasses powered by the Android XR platform. Unlike the upcoming luxury variants, Project Aura is reported to feature a more utilitarian design, characterized by thicker black frames similar to current market competitors.
The shift toward fashion-centric branding also addresses psychological barriers regarding privacy and social acceptance. Industry leaders, including Snap CEO Evan Spiegel, have noted that consumers often hesitate to wear hardware branded by social media or data-heavy tech companies. By embedding AI into luxury frames, Google hopes to transform the perception of smart glasses from a niche gadget into an indispensable fashion statement.
While the technical specifications for the Gucci collaboration remain under development, the project underscores Google’s commitment to monetizing AI through premium hardware ecosystems. Pricing details have not yet been disclosed.
