Google has initiated a significant design overhaul for its application icons, introducing a new visual language defined by gradient effects and modernized shapes. Following an official design update confirmed in May of last year, the Mountain View-based company is now expanding this aesthetic shift to its broader ecosystem, with a specific focus on the Google Workspace suite.

Strategic Shift in Visual Identity

Reports from 9to5Google highlight a new wave of updates encompassing 13 distinct icons. The primary objective appears to be twofold: implementing sophisticated gradient textures and streamlining the overall look to feel more contemporary.

One of the most notable aspects of this redesign is the departure from a rigid adherence to Google’s four-color palette across every service. In previous iterations, apps like Drive, Calendar, and Meet utilized a standardized combination of blue, red, yellow, and green. The new versions move toward a more personalized, specialized approach for each service. For instance, the Google Drive icon has notably removed its red element, while Google Meet, Chat, and Calendar have shifted toward a more “monochromatic” or simplified color scheme to reduce visual repetition and help users distinguish between tools more quickly.

Impacted Applications

The productivity suite—Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides—received the most substantial updates. Beyond standard refinements, the Google Keep icon underwent a significant transformation, moving away from its traditional lightbulb-on-paper look toward a cleaner design. Furthermore, Google Forms and Google Sites have received entirely new, dedicated icons; previously, these services did not have unique standalone branding within the ecosystem.

While these changes aim to provide a more cohesive and professional feel for enterprise users, the new aesthetic is expected to divide opinions among those accustomed to the classic look.
