Spotify is currently developing a new bulk redownload tool designed to streamline the process of upgrading a user’s offline music library to higher-quality audio tiers. This feature specifically addresses a current limitation where users must manually delete and redownload files to transition existing offline content to lossless quality.
While Spotify currently allows Premium users to select various download qualities—ranging from low (~24 kbps) to lossless (up to ~2,100 kbps)—the application does not automatically upgrade previously downloaded files when a user switches to the lossless tier. Code discovered in Spotify for Android version 9.1.48.148 reveals strings for an “Update existing downloads” option, which would allow users to refresh their entire library to match their current quality settings.
Although the code does not explicitly name the lossless tier as the sole beneficiary, the app already automates upgrades between non-lossless tiers. This makes the “Bulk Redownload” tool a likely solution for the lossless tier, which currently stands as an outlier in the upgrade process.
