It transmits rapid notifications to users located in nearby regions before the most destructive shockwaves reach their specific geographic locations. To achieve this, the technology utilizes the built-in accelerometers present in millions of active smartphones, effectively turning the devices into a widespread, distributed network of ground sensors.

When Google’s central algorithms detect a synchronized pattern of seismic vibration across multiple devices simultaneously, the system calculates the estimated epicenter and the magnitude of the earthquake. An automated alert is then instantly dispatched to the surrounding population. This early warning enables citizens to halt hazardous activities, evacuate buildings, or move away from potentially falling structures and objects. While current technology cannot predict seismic events hours in advance, it offers a crucial window for emergency safety measures.

Data released by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that Venezuela experienced a twin earthquake event. The initial tremor registered a magnitude of 7.2, which was followed less than a minute later by a second, more powerful tremor measuring 7.5. The seismic activity resulted in the collapse of several buildings within the capital city of Caracas.
