Scammers have killed the physical Steam Gift cards
Silviu STAHIE · 2026-06-16 · via Consumer Insights

Scammers have essentially killed the Steam gift cards and Valve has decided to pull the plug on this nifty option, citing their frequent use in various fraud schemes.

Valve has decided to discontinue physical Steam Gift Cards, marking the end of a program that has existed for more than a decade. The company says persistent gift card scams has forced their hard, despite years of efforts to protect customers.

Physical cards will gradually disappear from store shelves in 2026, while digital gift cards and Steam Wallet codes will remain available.

Key Takeaways

  • Valve will stop restocking physical Steam Gift Cards at retailers.
  • Existing retail inventory will remain available until stores sell out.
  • The company expects retailers to run out of stock by the end of 2026.
  • Steam Digital Gift Cards will remain available.
  • Steam Wallet codes can still be redeemed.
  • Valve cites ongoing gift card scams as the primary reason for ending physical card sales.
  • Existing physical Steam Gift Cards will remain redeemable, subject to local laws.

Why Valve is ending physical Steam Gift Cards

Valve announced it will discontinue physical Steam Gift Cards sold in retail stores, following years of battling fraud and gift card abuse. According to the company, scammers continue to exploit gift cards despite multiple countermeasures introduced over the years.

The company first introduced Steam Gift Cards in retail locations in 2012 and later launched digital gift cards in 2017. Over time, Valve worked with retailers and law enforcement agencies, added scam warnings to cards, limited redemption options, and reduced card availability in an attempt to curb fraud.

Despite those efforts, scammers adapted and continued to abuse them.

Valve says the continued misuse of gift cards by criminals ultimately led to the decision to end the retail program entirely. As stores exhaust their remaining inventory, Valve will no longer replenish stock. The company expects physical Steam Gift Cards to disappear from retailers by the end of 2026.

How scammers abused Steam gift cards

Gift card scams remain one of the most common forms of financial fraud worldwide.

According to Valve, criminals frequently impersonate government agencies, relatives, employers, or other trusted individuals and pressure victims into purchasing gift cards. Victims then share the gift card code and PIN with the scammer, who quickly redeems the funds.

Because gift cards function like digital cash and are difficult to recover once redeemed, they have become a preferred payment method for many fraud schemes.

As we pointed out in 2025, Steam Gift Card scams remained a big problem for the industry.

Real Steam Gift Cards can have values between $5 and $100. They can be bought directly from Steam or other retailers, including actual stores. But they can only be redeemed on Steam. Unfortunately, victims don’t know this and fall prey to whichever ruse criminals use.

How to avoid gift card scams

Consumers should be cautious whenever someone requests payment through gift cards.

Common warning signs include:

  • Someone claiming to be from a government agency is demanding immediate payment.
  • Requests to purchase gift cards to resolve taxes, fines or legal issues.
  • Pressure tactics that create urgency.
  • Instructions to reveal gift card codes or PINs.
  • Requests for payment through Steam, Apple, Google Play, or other gift cards.

Remember: legitimate government agencies, banks, and businesses do not require payment by gift card.

If someone asks you to purchase a gift card and share its code, treat it as a major red flag.
