Hunter Brown, Houston Astros vs. Detroit Tigers ($10,000) — Brown last pitched in April due to a shoulder injury. He’s back after making four rehab starts. On Wednesday, he struck out seven over five innings while throwing 74 pitches. So there’s uncertainty as to his performance coming back from a long layoff and how deep he will go in this one. But when looking at the other options up top, he has the most upside in my opinion. For example, Gerritt Cole is only $500 cheaper and hasn’t thrown more than 83 pitches in any of his four starts after returning from injury himself. Prior to getting shut down, Brown posted a 1.6 FIP with a 39.5% strikeout rate in 10.2 innings, good for 29.7 and 23.7 FPTS. The walk rate was 14%, though, but the average exit velocity was only 85.6 mph with a 0% barrel rate. Detroit is 10th in strikeouts and 20th in both wOBA and wRC+.
Robert Gasser, Milwaukee Brewers vs. Cleveland Guardians ($5,500) — Through 18.1 innings, Gasser is posting a 7.25 FIP while allowing six home runs with a 10.3% walk rate. On the positive side, the strikeout rate is 21.8% while the average exit velocity is 86.7 mph. Cleveland was 24th in ISO, 26th in wOBA and 22nd in wRC+ without Jose Ramirez, who’s out for a while with a hamate injury. In addition, Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez are banged up, so the Guardians lineup will likely be watered down.
Pete Alonso, Baltimore Orioles at Seattle Mariners ($5,300) — Alonso has 16 home runs, 44 runs, 48 RBI and two stolen bases in 316 plate appearances. The average exit velocity is 95 mph, the barrel rate is 12.4% and the bat speed is 74.7 mph. Against right-handed pitching, he’s hit 13 of the 16 home runs and the wRC+ is 140 with an ISO of .250. Gilbert has a strikeout rate of 19.2% against righties compared to 30.9% against lefties.
Nick Madrigal, Los Angeles Angels at Arizona Diamondbacks ($2,400) — Madrigal is a light-hitting infielder with a career .069 ISO. I usually shun these type of players, but he’s put up double-digit FPTS in three of the last seven games. He only has 43 plate appearances on the season, but the strikeout rate is a microscopic 4.7% while the walk rate is 14%. The .353 BABIP is fueling the .333 batting average but he’s on a little heater right now and is cheap. Merrill Kelly has been better against righties than lefties, but that’s not saying much as the K-BB% is still only 10.9%.
Juan Soto, New York Mets at Cincinnati Reds ($5,800) — Through 231 plate appearances, Soto is doing Soto things with a .293/.387/.561 slash. Both the walk and strikeout rates are at 13% while the ISO is .268. He has 14 home runs, 32 runs, 34 RBI and six stolen bases. The average exit velocity is 93 mph and the barrel rate is 15.9%. Against right-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 177 with a .291 ISO. 11 of the 15 home runs have been hit off a righty. Now he gets to bat in Great American Small Park against Brady Singer, who is allowing a 91.4 mph average exit velocity and 11.3% barrel rate. Against lefties, the FIP is 6.27 while 11 of the 17 home runs allowed have come off the bat of a lefty.
Stuart Fairchild, Cleveland Guardians at Milwaukee Brewers ($2,300) — Fairchild has appeared in eight games and accumulated 18 plate appearances due to all the injuries. Over the last five games, he’s produced 13, 8, 2, 0, 2 and 7 FPTS. The strikeout rate is a whopping 44.4% but the walk rate is 27.8%. He has been extremely lucky with a .750 BABIP, but the average exit velocity is 96 mph. In his career against left-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 108 with a .154 ISO.
