Top college degrees for the highest-paying AI jobs in 2026
Phong Ngo · 2026-05-20 · via VnExpress English

Computer science, software engineering and mathematics are among the top college majors for landing high-paying artificial intelligence jobs, according to a recent report by financial site Investopedia.

Computer science and software engineering continue to dominate as demand grows for machine learning engineers, AI developers and software specialists.

Data science, statistics and mathematics are also gaining attention for building strong foundations in machine learning and analytics, though graduates often need stronger software engineering skills for industry roles.

Meanwhile, majors such as cognitive science, neuroscience and linguistics are becoming increasingly valuable in areas like natural language processing and human-AI interaction because they provide insight into human behavior and communication.

Engineering disciplines including electrical and computer engineering are also benefiting from rising demand for robotics, AI hardware and edge computing specialists.

To identify which college programs best prepare students for AI careers, Investopedia analyzed academic rankings, faculty research, program documents and hiring data. The review drew on sources including QS World University Rankings by Subject, Times Higher Education computer science rankings, U.S. News & World Report undergraduate AI program rankings, CSRankings and EduRank.

The analysis also examined hundreds of recent AI-related job postings on LinkedIn and Indeed, focusing on entry-level and early-career positions.

Experts say students should choose majors based not only on salary potential but also on their interests and strengths. Students who enjoy coding and building systems may be better suited for computer science, while those interested in mathematics and modeling may thrive in statistics or applied mathematics. Students drawn to human behavior, ethics or user experience could find opportunities in cognitive science, design or philosophy-related AI fields.

Leading universities offering AI-related programs across these disciplines include Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Carnegie Mellon University and University of California, Berkeley.
