Signal booster disrupts mobile network at Vietnam border ...
Trong Dat · 2026-06-08 · via VnExpress English

A mobile signal booster purchased abroad and installed by an individual has caused interference with the telecommunications network in the Chinese border area of Mong Cai.

The Radio Frequency Department reported on June 7 that the Radio Frequency Center Region V had detected an illegally operating mobile signal repeater on the border.

A repeater receives and amplifies signals from base stations to improve coverage quality in areas with weak signals or indoors, but can become a source of radio interference if installed without authorization or fails to meet technical standards.

According to authorities, the device was bought by an individual abroad and self-installed in their a house in an urban residential area.

It was intended to boost mobile signal for subscribers but ended up disrupting telecommunications in the border area in May.

An inspection showed the device had not been granted a license and lacked a conformity marking as required by regulations. It was emitting radio signals that directly affected mobile base stations.

According to the department, the use of substandard signal boosters can degrade telecommunications network quality, causing signal instability, dropped calls, and reduced data speeds, and also pose a threat to communications security.

Following the discovery, Radio Frequency Center Region V fined and ordered the device owner to disconnect it and take remedial measures required by the law.

The Radio Frequency Department said the unauthorized use of signal boosters is mushrooming, and it has detected more than 500 violations since 2023.

The deployment of the iSpectra mobile interference monitoring and detection system since 2025 has helped cut case processing time by around 30% while improving both accuracy and the number of cases detected.

Authorities advise the public not to buy, sell, or use floating radio devices of unclear or unverified origin, or those lacking conformity markings. Users should choose products that meet technical standards and are legally authorized for circulation, to avoid causing harmful interference or compromising information security.

Under current regulations, the unauthorized use of signal booster devices can be fined up to VND30 million (US$1,140).
