Archive click tracking
Justin Duke · 2025-05-27 · via Buttondown's blog

A screenshot of the activity section, replete with web-borne clicks

When we built our own tracking infrastructure, it unlocked a lot of doors for us to easily and safely start bringing in more information to get a better sense of what writing is most engaging for your readership. We have officially opened one of those doors, and now, if you have click tracking enabled, Buttondown will also start tracking clicks not just from the original broadcast of the email but from any archives as well. This is the same privacy-first, lightweight tracking that we use for emails, and it's available to all Buttondown users for free.

While we were at it, we wanted to tackle a niche (but less niche than you might expect!) use case: opting out certain links from being tracked, for one reason or another (a classic one: deep-linking to a specific section of an app, which gets broken because our click tracking redirects users into the browser beforehand.) You can now do this by adding a ?do_not_track=true query parameter to the link.

We're always looking for ways to make Buttondown more useful for you, and we're excited to see what you build with it.
