Scientists and locals unite to film a large, elusive New ...

One of New Guinea’s largest land animals is a bird: the northern cassowary, which can stand up to 1.8 metres tall. Despite its imposing stature and importance to local ecosystems, it is rarely seen in the wild and is poorly understood. Working alongside three community members from Malagufuk – a rainforest village that has become a destination for birdwatchers seeking birds of paradise – the Indonesian ornithologist Yoki Hadiprakarsa and US wildlife photographer Tim Laman set camera traps deep in the forest, hoping to film the cassowary in its natural habitat. This short film by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology documents their eight-month search, through false starts and near misses, until the cassowary finally appears on camera. In the process, it reveals not only one of New Guinea’s most elusive birds, but what becomes possible when scientific expertise and generations of local knowledge come together.
