CPI(M) leader and former Higher Education Minister K.T. Jaleel has criticised the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) over what he called its contradictory positions on issues, including the PM-SHRI scheme.

In a Facebook post on Saturday (June 20), Mr. Jaleel said Kerala society will not accept what he termed the IUML’s “PM-SHRI mohabbat”.

The IUML had opposed the PM-SHRI scheme when the Left Democratic Front (LDF) was in power, but is now reviewing its implementation after the United Democratic Front (UDF) returned to power, with IUML Minister N. Shamsudheen holding the General Education portfolio.

The UDF has constituted a four-member Cabinet sub-committee, chaired by Mr. Shamsudheen, to examine implementation of the scheme. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has said the State cannot forego Central funds and will proceed with PM-SHRI.

Mr. Jaleel accused the IUML of shifting positions depending on whether it is in the Opposition or in government. He said the party raised community-related issues and rights claims while in Opposition, but changed stance after coming to power.

“The Muslim League engages in identity politics while in Opposition, invoking religion and community concerns. It opposes PM-SHRI, claims Munambam is Waqf land and demands additional courses in Malappuram aided schools. It also objects to practices such as lighting the traditional lamp,” he said.

“When in power, Muslim League takes a different position. PM-SHRI becomes necessary, Munambam is not Waqf land, the Malappuram Plus-Two issue is to be studied and even lighting the traditional lamp is accepted,” Mr. Jaleel said.
