The Karnataka State Municipal Corporation Employees’ Association has written to the Urban Development Department, warning that it will suspend all municipal works and go on strike in June if its long-pending demands are not addressed.

The association’s key demands include amendment to the General Appointment Rules of Municipal Corporations, 2011, to consider the employees of the municipal corporation as government employees and provision of group insurance scheme and group provident fund facilities to the officers/employees of the municipal corporations.

In a letter dated May 8, the association said it was considering suspending the functioning of municipal corporations across the State, declaring a mass holiday and launching an indefinite strike next month over the government’s failure to act on its demands. It stated that the association had submitted several petitions over the years seeking the fulfilment of various demands, but had received no positive response from the government.

Previously, the association had launched a strike on July 8, 2025. The protest was later withdrawn following a request from the Urban Development Minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department, who had requested the association to call off the agitation.

The association said meetings were then held on July 11, 2025, under the Urban Development Minister, and again on July 15, 2025. During these meetings, the government had reportedly assured the association that all its demands would be fulfilled within six months, following which the strike was withdrawn.

However, the association said that even after nearly a year, none of the demands had been fulfilled. It said a meeting of its office-bearers is convened on May 24, during which they will take a call on resuming the agitation and continue the strike until their demands are met.
