Seeking sufficient supply of properly chlorinated drinking water and immediate steps to make the badly damaged roads motorable, the public submitted petition to Mayor G. Ramakrishnan during the weekly grievances redress meeting held here on Tuesday.

A group of residents of Tuckerammalpuram Residents’ Welfare Association submitted a petition seeking appointment of valve operators for ensuring adequate supply of drinking water to the residents. “Since the drinking valve operation in our area is erratic for the past several months, we’re suffering a lot to get drinking water. Hence, the Corporation should deploy the valve operator for our area,” the petitioner said.

Complaining about erratic drinking water supply in his ward, DMK councillor of ward 13 Shankar Kumar said the residents of his ward did not get water supply for the past 10 days. Hence, the Corporation should address this issue at the earliest.

On behalf of Makkal Adhikara Kazhagam, a petition was submitted seeking relaying of damaged roads in Melapalayam where the underground drainage work was getting dragged for the past few years.

“The damaged roads and dusty stretches are causing breathing problems to the residents. Hence, the Corporation should relay the roads where the underground drainage work is completed,” the petition said.

State deputy secretary of Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi Bilal Raja and a few others, who had brought a bottle of turbid water, submitted a petition complaining about supply of contaminated drinking water to the residents of Melapalayam and the insanitary conditions prevailing in this area due to poor garbage collection.

“While the clogged drainage channels are overflowing, no germicide is sprinkled in these nauseating spots,” Mr. Bilal said.

A group of people from V.M. Chathram submitted a petition complaining about the overflowing of sewage from the underground drainage system to create a pond in their area. “Now, sewage from this pond is overflowing into the Nochchikulam, a waterbody that would improve groundwater table during monsoons. Hence, the Corporation should take steps to check this menace before the onset of monsoon and save Nochchikulam,” the petitioners said.

Another petition was submitted to construct compound wall around the Jinnah Grounds in Melapalayam and allow the students of Quaid-E-Milleth Government Higher Secondary School students to use it as their playground. “Since this ground is used by the public to park their vehicles including mini cargo vehicles and heaping construction materials, the ground should be put into good use,” the petitioners said.
