K.K. Harshina, an alleged victim of a medical negligence case at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, joined for duty at the Institute of Maternal and Child Health in the paediatric and gynaecology wing of the hospital on Tuesday (May 26, 2026).

She has been appointed as an office assistant, under the hospital development society, by the government. This comes a day after Ms. Harshina met Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and Health Minister K. Muraleedharan at Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.

“I have finally got justice. This is a victory for my fight for the past four years. I am very happy... This is a reply to those who ignored and sidelined me while claiming that they were with me. I thank all the organisations and people who stood with me,” she told the media later. Ms. Harshina, a native of Adivaram in Kozhikode, also thanked the Chief Minister and the Health Minister. She said that Mr. Satheesan has promised to cover the expenses for her ongoing medical treatment.

A surgical instrument was left behind in Ms. Harshina’s stomach after a C-section surgery performed at the medical college hospital in 2017. However, it went unnoticed. The instrument was later removed through another surgery conducted at the same hospital in 2022. Ms. Harshina had to go through unbearable pain and hardships during the period.

Though the previous Left Democratic Front government had promised to address her concerns and issue a fair compensation, she and her family had alleged that they had failed to do so. Ms. Harshina underwent two surgeries as part of the follow-up treatment, which is still ongoing. Her fight for justice and a fair compensation was taken up by the Harshina Samara Sahaya Samithi led by Congress leader Dinesh Perumanna.

Ms. Harshina said that she had never expected that she would get a job, but the appointment letter was mailed to her on Monday (May 25, 2026) itself.

The proceedings on a criminal case filed against two doctors and two nurses, who were on duty during the surgery, at a Kunnamangalam court have been stayed by the High Court. Another civil case seeking a financial compensation is expected to be taken by a Kozhikode court in July 2026.
